Bullet Train (2022)
My new favorite movie
Seriously, it was so fun, I laughed out loud throughout the movie (rare) and I appreciated that the fight scenes didn't drag out. There's a darkness to many of these kinds of movies and a certain level of anxiousness you usually feel when you're watching. Not here. It was just a good time.
It's like, literally the exact opposite of John Wick, if we're comparing vibes on "professional hitmen movies". Which isn't good or bad, just different.
The Ingenuity of the Househusband (2021)
Fun, but misses the punchline
I think this show is amusing, but for me it lacks the comedic punch of the anime series it is based on. That show, The Way Of The Househusband, is about an ex-yukaza head mobster who retires and becomes the scariest and most efficient househusband on the block. This live action show lacks the context for me, as this is just a regular dude, to find it funny. Like I said, amusing and fun. But I'm not in love with it.
Gyeongiroun Somun (2020)
Good stuff
I'm not gonna waste your time with a lot of words here. 6 episodes in.
The show is really good; characters are likeable and well developed, story is fun, mystery is unraveling at a good pace. It's just what I needed.
I've been watching too much stuff with characters going through one existential crisis after another and it's so tiresome. This show doesn't take itself too seriously and I LOVE that.
It's funny and emotionally compelling. I just love it to death (no pun intended).
I'm stoked that I'm watching it after it was all released so I can binge watch and forget my troubles. 😂
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Subtle, lovely drama
I really really liked this movie. It was beautiful and the acting was phenomenal.
But, it was so slow and I think you need to be in the right mood to enjoy it. If you're feeling antsy or looking for an action flick you'll be very frustrated with this film. I was just having a lazy afternoon with my husband and we were both feeling mellow and we both really enjoyed it.
There is an element of 'willing suspension of disbelief' one needs to accept to fully enjoy the film. Many reviews brought up the scene in the water and that's so valid. It crossed my mind and then I decided to let it go and just enjoy the movie.
Reckoning (2019)
Really good
I'm really surprised at all the negative reviews. I thought this was a really good show. The characters were nuanced and flawed but felt very human to me. There were no major characters that were really stereotypical or over the top. It was really relatable that way.
This reminds me more of the slow burn of a British crime show where we know who the bad guys are and it's about the journey, not about the big surprise reveal. There was still mystery and I certainly didn't guess everything that was going to happen because, again, the characters weren't predictable like a lot of shows.
I'll be really stoked if they take this from a mini series to a show with more seasons!
Perpetual Grace, LTD (2019)
Amazing
This is one of the best shows I've ever watched. It's beautifully filmed, tongue-in-cheek funny, nuanced, and the characters are all somehow simultaneously horrid but completely loveable.
I totally agree with the people who says it's like if the Coen brothers and David Lynch had a baby and it was a TV show.
October Faction (2020)
Fun ride, a little over the top
So, I wasn't planning on watching this show because the score was so low I thought it must be total garbage. But I was bored today and decided to give it a chance. I'm a few episodes in and so far I think it's pretty good. This is why I have to remember to take Imdb reviews with a grain of salt.
I do think the show hits a little hard on the "mean popular kids" trope and they're unrealistically cruel, especially to a couple of super attractive rich kids. Although there are no other black kids in the school and the brother is gay and the sister is weird and sullen. So it's not totally off the mark. I just think it could have been less melodramatic.
It's an interesting show, not the best, not the worst. Unless it takes a crazy turn like some people have said in other reviews, it's worth watching on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
I've waited forever for this!
This series was so beautiful and well written I became completely enthralled by the 2nd episode. It just gets better as the episodes progress so be sure to give it at least 3 before you make a real judgement.
I am a HUGE fan of the original movie and I watched it twice in the months before this came out. I thought it was a perfect adaptation of the world with the progress we've made in puppetry and special effects over the last 30 years.
I loved it so much that I started watching the season all over again as soon as I finished. I've never done that before! There's just so much, it's impossible to absorb it all the first time.
