Mission: Impossible III (2006)
Tremendous Villain
One of the best of the franchise, mainly thanks to a truly chilling performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's a rare example of a film where you really feel that the stakes are high and that the bad guy is truly threatening.
Part 3 is still fairly small in scale compared to what came later, not to say that there aren't some spectacular stunts - my favourite sequence was the bridge scene in Florida, as well as the various face-swapping scenes.
6.9 is definitely too low a rating for what is a very decent action film. I like most of what JJ Abrams has done as a director and it is certainly an enormous step up for the franchise from part 2.
Blood Red Sky (2021)
Surprisingly decent!
Turns out that all the reviews criticising the kid's performance were watching the dubbed version! Unless you can't read I have no idea why anybody would want to watch a film with dubbing instead of subtitles anyway.
As for the film, I enjoyed it! It held my attention until the end and was pretty vicious in parts. Lots of intrigue then it turns into quite a standard vampire flick but I was interested enough to see how it turned out. Most of the acting was pretty decent and the main bad guy was enjoyably OTT.
I don't get the bad reviews - watch it with subtitles on and enjoy it for what it is.
Whiplash (2014)
Best Film This Century!
It was so unexpected to me when I watched it in the cinema that Whiplash would turn out to be one of the most intense thrillers I have ever seen. There are a couple of huge plot twists which will leave you speechless, coupled with a performance by JK Simmons which may never be bettered - IMO the most deserving Oscar in history. The way his character turns from nasty to sympathetic to vengeful in the blink of an eye is just breathtaking.
The music is brilliant (and I normally hate jazz) and the ending is probably the best I have ever seen. Satisfying on so many levels!
On paper a film about a jazz musician sounds pretty dull but don't let that fool you. It really is one of the best films I have ever seen. Don't miss it!
