Beast (2022)
A Safari Thrill Ride
The premise is a straight-forward, man vs. Nature survival story. The movie tells a story of a family's safari trip gone awry due to the presence of a rogue lion. The majority of the movie focuses on Idris Elba's character and his two daughters being stranded in a broken jeep in the middle of a safari. The lion appears intermittently and causes a few jump scares. Eventually, Idris Elba decides to go on the offense to protect his two daughters.
The movie makers effectively build tension by hinting at the ever-present possibility of
the lion in the bushes and trees' shadows. The family dynamic is relatively effective, however, some of the characters make questionable decisions throughout the movie (i.e. Running off on their own, yelling and screaming loudly, etc.). The last act goes a bit overboard when Idris Elba starts to throw punches and is basically in a fist fight with the lion. Overall, the movie works well as a simple action movie due to it's ability to capture heightened tension.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
The Dark Knight Rises concludes the Batman trilogy with a colossal ending.
The Dark Knight Rises picks up from the events of the last movie, with Bruce reluctantly resuming his Batman identity to face his most formidable foe to date, Bane.
The movie follows several story arcs and takes some time exploring new characters, but because the characters are so well-developed
and dimensional that the long screen time feels justified. Bane's imposing stature and terrifying presence makes him an iconic villain, while John Blake brings a much-needed sensibility to this epic. The visual is also top notch, with stunning scenes of cityscapes that capture the massive scale of the story.
This was a satisfying and climatic conclusion to the groundbreaking trilogy.
Cobra Kai (2018)
This show is BADASS!
The series picks up a few decades after the events of the last Karate Kid movie. In the present, sensei Johnny and sensei Daniel decided to each start their own dojos and revive their age-old rivalry.
This series is the perfect blend of nostalgia and action-packed adrenaline: I like how the series pays respect to the original characters, at the same time adding depth to the old-timers and seamlessly weaving in new characters and storylines. The characters are so well-written that each season is consistently enjoyable and solid.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
A solid work of art.
This movie marks the departure of the lightheartedness of the previous movies into a much more serious and somber journey. The moody visuals and cinematography convey the inner emotional experiences of the characters. The scene with the Dementors on the train captured everything I'd imagine when reading the book. They definitely did the book justice w/ this movie.
Onward (2020)
Simpler and more low-key Pixar
This movie tells the story of two kids who set out on an adventure to bring back their dad.
The story is not as complex or introspective as other Pixar films like Wall-e and Inside Out, but still brings on the tears and feels often synonymous with Pixar. The movie has a playful simplicity and lighthearted tone that makes it enjoyable. There is a fun restaurant scene the kids convince a burnt out, but once-powerful-warrior, restaurant manager to resume her warrior ways.
Soul (2020)
Existential and deep
Heartwarming, powerful and amazing! One of my favorite Pixar movies.
Soul is a story about a musician who, after having a near death experience, was transported to "the great beyond." There he meets 22, a rebellious soul, as they journey together on a life changing adventure. In addition to being a beautifully rendered animation, the movie explores some abstract themes, such as purpose and drive. In addition, I enjoyed the soulful and heart-felt story and characters. I definitely recommend this movie!
The Mandalorian (2019)
This series is the way!
This series focuses on Mando, a bounty hunter who goes rogue after rescuing "the Child". Mando must get the Child to safety before Imperial forces hunt them down.
The series expands upon many Star Wars mythologies, such as the history of the Mandalorians and the Jedis. The show is adrenaline fueled, emotionally resonating, and action-packed.
Coco (2017)
One of Pixar's finests.
The movie tells a story of Coco, a musically-inclined kid who gets transported in to the world of the afterlife. Coco goes on an emotional and life-changing journey where he learns about the importance of family.
The animation is inspired by the cultural and historical celebration of Muertos Los Dias. The scene where Coco first sees the city is magical and otherworldly. This movie has so many positive aspects, from the soulful music, emotionally resonating storyline, to the world building.
