Watch the original - this is terrible
30 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I eagerly awaited this remake hoping that maybe they could do a good job of updating the original - No they did not. It was too long, too dragged out, too confusing and too bad. Now I know what some of the writers were doing while on strike. It seems like they tried to put in every idea they had while on strike into this movie and it just doesn't work, including the scene where the bird attack - shades of Hitchcock's "The Birds". I think they should have left well enough alone. Seems like every time Hollywood wants to do a remake it just doesn't come anywhere near the quality of the original. Thank God they decided against remaking Casablanca. Too bad they didn't realize that remaking this wasn't a good idea either.

Not as good as the 1956 version

Patrick Stuart wasn't bad as Captain Ahab, but not as good as Gregory Peck. In the scene where Ahab is telling his crew that he will chase the "white whale" virtually around the world, Stuart felt the need to shout. Peck, on the other hand, did it far more intensly by a withering look and more sterness in his voice and didn't shout. A far better performance.
