Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
I hoped for better.
I waited a long time for this series. I watched the entire thing and didn't really feel it. I mean the story line is a lot closer to the book that the attempted movie adaptation. But I think the cast is not ready or not directed well. Though the movie lost the original story, the actors and actress did a better job. But I have to put in consideration that the ages of the three protagonists are accurate, I'm afraid they didn't capture the essence of the characters. I didn't feel them. Of course they were very young so I guess I better put that into consideration. I hope they'll do a better job with the Sea of Monsters or the show might not last another season.
Voltes V: Legacy - The Cinematic Experience (2023)
The dawn of Pinoy gfx and 3d animation
First, I'm officially a Voltes V addict ever since. I watched and are-watched all the episodes so I know the story very very well. Even when it was cancelled all those years ago, I never stopped hoping to finish the story and eventually I did. I was delighted when I heard GMA was going to make a remake so I, together with my childhood friend watched it today. We were not disappointed. The show really is at par with modern technology, as well as faithfully (for the majority) to it's original incarnation. Let's with the bad point as there's always room for improvement, and please bear in mind that this is the first ever attempt by Filipinos in this kind of cinematic experience. The music, though well scored and well orchestrated needs a little tweaking in the mix. Though it is very much competitive and modernized well, somehow it lacks the punch to make me grit my teeth like the original soundtrack. Also the martial arts sequence is not as well choreographed. Not too ambitious but the Voltes Team are supposed to be the best of the best so perhaps a little more speed would not be too inappropriate. There's also the implications of love angle though it might not be such a bad thing. We are hoping for a little more female audience so having that might not hurt but might also put off the purists. Now let's get to the good part. I'm delighted to say the actors, especially the ones portraying Mrs. Armstrong and Little Jon took my breath away. The original lacked the emotional impact our local actors delivered. What can I say? Pinoys do pack a punch when it comes to drama and the performers didn't disappoint. They added a few sequences that weren't in the original telling like steve's crush on Jaime. They also elaborated on the pilot's role like Robinson being the communications and health officer, panzer being the weapons controller, and the weapons itself controlled by the individual who are expert on them like the whip and top being controlled by bomber (mark). The Ironman style photographic interface on cockpit wall also a cool addition to the visuals. Now the major part. As I mentioned earlier this is the very first VFX intensive movie ever created by our guys and I'll say bravo guys. It's impressive and though I can state that it's not at par with those Hollywood biggies, it's considerably awesome enough. I'm just a little at odds on the team's attire. Honestly guys, they are pilots. Not marines so that get up is majorly uncomfortable for flying. Hehehe! Over all, this is it guys. This is our first step into major modern movie and television making and I hope this will continue. This is the first ever Pinoy movie that could be distributed internationally, I kid you not.
The Whale (2022)
A Whale of a Movie
I already heard this movie was a tear jerker way before I watched it and deserving of awards. I have to admit I'm a Fraser fan since I first saw George of the Jungle. Then gems like Bedazelled and the Mummy trilogy. I can honestly say the guy is a really likeable hero of the big screen. But this movie... What can I say, they subtracted everything the man was known for? His good looks, incredible physic, and his goofy comedy. What I witnessed is another or perhaps the highest level an actor can ever achieve. I was in awe at how he portrayed the main character and really appreciate how he transformed himself not just physically. This is acting at it's finest and I really feel he should take major awards for this.
But it's not just him. The co-stars are all well casted and well directed. I also have to remark on how Sadie Sink carried the role of a rebellious teenager. Her performance is simply stunning and I'm looking forward to her next projects. Of course the other performers were also amazing and I have to mention Hong Chau's remarkable portrayal.
The story was compelling and relatable specially to people like myself and it will take a long time for the images from this movie to fade from my memory. This movie is one in a million and will touch you on many levels. I urge you to watch this with a box of tissue.
