Shôrin rôjo (2008)
Hysterical!
This movie was a riot. Absolutely one of the funniest things I have seen in recent years. The acting is generally awful, especially from our leading grandma, but it doesn't matter at all. The total ridiculousness of the plot, cast, special effects and our lovable, totally mute grandma will win you over.
The movie starts when the local mailman discovers the dead grandma in her home and begins to rummage through her things. Finding what he thinks is her will, he begins reading and the story of Gran's life unfolds.
The dojo at a Shaolin temple, Miyoko (grandma) is defeated by a rival and ousted into the real world. She and her two followers learn how to survive Tokyo and soon begin work at a bar, throwing out rowdy patrons while entertaining the crowd with song and dance. From here until the end of the movie we see Gran trying on bras, playing croquet, trying many different sexual positions, defeat those who ousted her from the Shaolin temple and, of course, get married.
The beauty of this movie is it is short. At only 72 minutes it becomes a fast, entertaining beer and popcorn movie. The humour lies in the absurdity of this 67 year old woman kicking arse and doing so silently. It serves its purpose well.
Hyperdrive (2006)
A fantastic, underrated show
While this show is constantly compared to Red Dwarf it is not a fair comparison. The other comparison of "The Office, in space" is much closer. I bought the first series DVD because I like Nick Frost and the premise was interesting.
The show follows the crew of the HMS Camden Lock in year 2151. It features such British comedy staples such as the aforementioned Nick Frost (as the Space Captain) and Kevin Eldon (as First Officer York). They run into various alien races, usually resulting in hilarious outcomes, such as The Engulfers ("Oooh! Right up its mouth arse!").
I will admit that the first couple of episodes didn't have me in hysterics but it got better very quickly. As for series 2, this is where the show became truly comfortable with itself. It is a shame that the BBC has not commissioned a third series as I would love to continue these adventures with such a fantastic crew!
