The Batman (2022)
Long, Refreshing, & Exciting
Who'd ever thought Edward would be my favorite Batman?
This is exactly what Batman was missing. All of the Batmans in live action movies are in their later years - the movies start after they've been Batman for a while and are sort of mature and in a groove. I believe Christian Bale's was the youngest before this, but still presented as a Batman who was further along in his evolution.
This Batman is young and edgy and reckless and angry at himself. This is the closest Batman has ever been to Darth Vader. His mantra in this movie is Vengeance whereas the more mature Batman's are all about Justice. Oh - and he also does detective work, which he's pretty good at. Wasn't being the world's greatest detective the main idea from the very beginning of Batman?
Gotham looks like Gotham. The Riddler could have been done better but was altogether acceptable. Catwoman has just never been a character I ever found compelling. While still underwhelming, this might be the best Catwoman has ever been done. Bruce Wayne was cringey, but I think it was realistic to what Bruce Wayne would actually be like given the plot's premise - someone who isn't totally comfortable in their own skin yet.
For being such a long movie, I only had issues with the pacing two or three times. The action scenes were exciting. The score was incredible. Excited for the next one!
Along for the Ride (2022)
This is really bad
Did anybody involved with this film actually like the project? Every single aspect of the movie (acting, writing, directing, music, lighting, props, etc.) felt like it was just a bunch of employees going through the minimum effort in order to make a marketable product. Nothing felt genuine about it.
I usually like Netflix's teen drama originals - they're typically light and simple and treats the viewer with some level of respect, but Along for the Ride was too phoned in.
I believe it is based off of a competent novel, but in the film the story comes off as if someone got ahold of a 15 year old's Wattpad drama and found the most detached people to make a movie about it. Badly butchered. I hope the author never sees it!!
The mom actor was the best performance. Her baby wasn't crying in that one scene on the couch - the ADRing was an all-out tantrum while the kid looked perfectly content.
I felt embarrassed for the actors and writers in almost every scene.
