So-won (2013)
Disturbing, but...
Very disturbing feature about rape and beating of an 8 year old girl on her way to school. Luckyly the film's director doesen't show the gruesome scenes and the whole movie is dedicated on the aftermath of the crime itself. It shows the importance of having family and friends support during such time. It also shows the stupidity of korean legal system ( it's similar here in Croatia ) and all crimes in that domain should be punished most severely. All in all, very good movie ( the most touching scene is when the little girl tells her dad that he can take off the funny cartoon costume in which he follows her around to make her days easier ). Those who like the movie, try another korean masterpiece - Miracle in cell no. 7. Cheers
Jigureul jikyeora! (2003)
Awesome
Totally cool movie. :) It's a mixture of few different genres ( it has comedy, SF, action...) and that's not so unusual for korean cinema. The basic story begins when the main character, Lee Byeong-gu, kidnaps another man, convinced that the latter is an alien. The lead actor Shin Ha-kyun is, as always, very strong and persuasive in his performance. The twist at the end of the movie is something you would not expect but it absolutely gives an extra charme to the movie. Although some special effects look lame and thrashy, it does not effect the movie quality, on the contrary it's a great supplement to the movie itself. Try watch it if you are casual SF fan, you won't regret it.
Welkkeom tu Dongmakgol (2005)
Epic...
Wow. Rarely any movie leaves me breathless but this one sure did. Welcome to Dongmakgol is an anti-war epic movie. Casting is perfect ( Kang Hye-Jung in a role of crazy local girl is outstanding, so are Jung Jae-young & Shin Ha-Kyun in the roles of North & South Korean soldiers ), music by Joe Hisaishi is phenomenal and the whole atmosphere of the movie is fantastic. You almost feel proud to watch those soldiers being normal human beings and the village of Dongmakgol is my personal vision of paradise on Earth. I've become a huge fan of Korean cinema and this movie is certainly one of the great reasons for that. Strong recommendation, a must see movie.
