Chef's Table: Pizza (2022)
Bad bad bad voice translations
The episodes where people are speaking for themselves are pretty good, although I do find the origin stories rather sad and whiny throughout - and the chefs unlikeable except for the first episode. The worst part is that they use voice translations instead of subtitles - and they frickin' play the original dialog (eg Italian) loudly in the background - while at the same time playing a stilted American voiceover from someone who sounds like they read and speak at a third grade level. No emotion or inflection whatsoever. It's unbearable. I would rather hear the people speaking in their own language - some of which I'll understand - and read subtitles - than hear a horrible American actor who doesn't even sound like the people in the film look. (Blind people, by the way, have their own adaptive equipment so don't say this is more inclusive.) It sucks balls of mozzarella and ruins the series.
Black·ish: Black Like Us (2019)
More Shaming
I don't understand why you would shame Asians for using umbrellas for sun protection. Lighter skinned people need more protection from the sun. It doesn't mean they're colorist or afraid of turning darker.
And Just Like That... (2021)
Try More Than One Episode
If you had a hard time with the first episode, I suggest you keep going because it does get better - and funnier!
The first episode had problems. They made the women act and look older than they are. Carrie looks haggard. They all limp around like every joint has gone stiff. Also, the preaching on gender and race was over the top and clunky. The women act as if they haven't lived through the last 15 years and were just dropped into 2022; Miranda's cluelessness in her class was something only a much younger writer would dream up. Lastly, they killed off Big! I was so happy that Chris Noth was going to be on the show...and just like that, he was gone.
But once I hit episode two, I became more invested. The women seem to be thriving and the story is progressing much more naturally and feels more real. I'm very happy that they're back!
