Interstellar (2014)

One of if not the best space movie since 2001: A Space Odyssey
17 February 2024
With Kip Thorne at the helm both as executive producer and technical advisor, this was a real treat for the scientific community. Even Neil Degrasse Tyson rated the movie an 8 or 9 out of 10. So much thought went into the realism of this movie that they got things spot on. From time dilation to cosmic waves and black holes. Excellent production, a stellar cast (pun intended) as well as special effects and direction made this a thoroughly enjoyable movie. My only issue with the story is the ability to survive a black hole and come out in one piece. Current theory states that as you enter a black hole and descend to the center you body stretches to the point of snapping over and over again. I still give it a 10!

Snooze Fest

Plot line unfolds so slow, I could watch paint dry faster. Even grill frontal nudity and the occasional smattering of violence isn't enough to combat the drowsiness effects.

Sorry, the show is intellectually impotent . I wasted my time on the first episode, but there's no way I could stomach all the seasons. Talents of more than one stellar actor has been thrown away of this drivvle I the money lavished on the production would have been more well spent on sharpening up the book adaptation. Better of watching Lord of Rings trilogy by Tolkien or even Assassin's Creed for that matter. Make your own judgement.

Plane (2023)

Keep your seatbelt fastened in your seats in an upright position
9 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The title of the movie did not grab me at first, just simply "plane" did not say anything, the execs wanted a longer title, but Girard insisted on keeping the title as short as possible. This movie is a throwback to the same genre popular in the 90s. Very smooth and satisfying ride.(pun intended) Gérard Butler did not disappoint and provided an excellent performance. Mike Colter was equally entertaining with a mysterious, and broody performance, Mike plays the part of Louis Gaspare, a handcuffed fugitive wanted for a murder that happened 15 years ago. His characters military training came in handy, but I have to wonder what happened to him towards the end of the movie as he disappeared into the jungle with the bag full of cash that was intended for the mercenary rescue team. The runtime was good and the movie ended before I was ready for the end. If you are into action movies with a minimal non-twisted storyline, then this might be the movie for you. I took off a couple of stars for some continuity and factual issues that I have grown to look for in previous movies as an amateur armchair critic. Overall, I would say this movie was enjoyable, so bring the popcorn.

Not what I expected, it was better
2 April 2023
I have to say that from the description it didn't seem like the movie for me, but I was gripped by it from the start. It takes a lot for a movie to keep me engaged all the way through but this one did it. Solid performance by the principle actor Storm Reid, who along with the well accomplished and beautiful Nia Long and fellow cast members kept me focused on the storyline. Unexpected twists had me wondering what's next. Not only was this the directorial debut by Will Merrick and Nick Johnson but they also wrote the screenplay based on an original story. If this movie demonstrates the caliber of their work I look forward to their next movie. I haven't included any spoilers here on purpose except to say I found the inclusion of modern technology was refreshing. Do yourself favor, watch this movie if it's your genre!

Much anticipated but falls short
31 December 2022
This movie is a perfect example of how it takes more than the latest special effects techniques, and CGI graphics, to turn the movie into a hit. While the visuals are notably spectacular, and the realism of the animated characters are very lifelike, the story lacks the essential elements to make this movie as much of a hit as the first one. The storyline seems contrite and difficult to follow. If you do not manage to grasp the concept of what Cameron is trying to convey in the first 20 minutes then you will be lost for the rest of the movie. There is no doubt this movie smashed the box, office records, but this may have been from the initial fanfare and newlywed relationship with it. I feel that once the publics love affair with the movie exits the honeymoon phase the box, office, receipts, will decline I anticipate this movie moving to a streaming platform in a few months from now. I am a very big fan of James Cameron's work and enjoy almost every movie he has made, but sometimes sequels don't hit the mark as is the case with this one. If you are a diehard Avatar fan, give it a shot, otherwise give it a miss. Hopefully this mediocre storyline will not set the tone for the upcoming Avatar 3 and 4 releases due to be released by 2025.

The Bruce Willis we knew is gone
26 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Another mostly non-action action movie. The real action (sic) takes 43 minutes into the movie to appear. Make sure you have a full bottle of No-Doze available until then. I understand that a back story and premise needs to be layed down but that could have been achieved much earlier in the movie. Bruce, like a lot of older action stars need to realize it's time to hang up their hats. Mediocre performances from the supporting cast lead to a disappointing experience. The black captain provides an unwanted comic relief element. Bottom line is, save yourself some time and avoid this movie altogether.

Just not my cup of tea
15 April 2022
When I embark on a new TV binge watch adventure, The show I pick must grab me on the first episode and unfortunately this is not the case with the show. The show is pitched as a dark comedy which is supposed to be reflective of today's modern work attitude between employees and employers. I think that everyone that has worked in an office environment, whether it be governmental or private sector is already fully aware of the culture. The show is dry, slow moving and at 38 minutes into the first episode I was still waiting for humor. Maybe it's too highbrow or cerebral for me or maybe it doesn't fit in with my British style of humor. Ben Stiller should probably stick to acting instead of directing, but a nice overall try.

A true masterpiece in my eyes
15 April 2022
I stumbled upon this show by accident. The title and poster attracted me. I had a little trouble picking up the theme and story/plot line but after a few minutes in the first episode I started to get it. The storyline is intriguing, the visuals are great and the writing keeps the story pushing along nicely. Thoroughly enjoying it so far.

More of the same... TAKEN 6.0
15 April 2022
So it started with Taken in 2009 and since then there have been many variations on the theme. The only real change there has been over time since then is an increase in relationship dialog and plot explanation and a definite decrease in the "action". When I put on an action movie, I expect action. If I wanted interpersonal relationship content I'd watch a daytime soap opera. Bottom line, the movie moves along slowly with a few sprinklings of action. If you are a Liam fan watch it, if not go read a book instead. As a man, this movie falls into the insomnia cure category.

Mediocre storyline and falls apart fast
18 March 2022
This movie moves like a steam train low on coal. I only gave it a 3 because I like Michael Jai White. Opening scenes were good and then the steam started to run out. It's a B movie from a B movie director. I found it funny how the gun carried by James toward the end of the movie loses and regains it silencer between cut scenes. Michael please consider the scripts you are presented with more carefully in future. You are way more talented than this. The five senses says this is FAKE.
