Doraibu mai kâ (2021)
Put your foot down on the gas peddle and drive on to the next movie theatre.
This movie is 3 movies in one. To say it's a slow mover is an understatement. If it were any slower it would be rewinding itself back on to the spool.
The first film is comprised of the story of his relationship and its complexity .The opening credits don't appear until almost an hour
into the film. By that time they seem more like closing credits .
The second movie is the lets put on a show movie. Let's put on a show worked for Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney but they sang and danced. You don't get any memorable tunes in Uncle Vanya. Chekhov once said , if there is a shotgun over the mantle in the fist act you can be sure it will go off by the third. And so it is here. But it's not a gun that goes off. At one point in the stage rehearsals of the Chekhov play one of the characters screams out words to the effect : please get me out of here even if you have to kill me. By that time I felt much the same.
Then it turns into a road movie. Two characters need to drive from Hiroshima to Hokaido. Even with my basic geography and high school Japanese studies I knew we were in for a long drive. My immediate thought was one of dread -I hope the car goes faster than the film otherwise we'll never get out of the cinema - I spent the rest of the film hoping all the traffic lights would be green and that they'd have no breakdowns .
