Yi Nian Yong Heng (2020)
Stop this, it's embarrassing
The only reason to watch this is to compare it to the book and see what an utter waste of resources this animation is.
I have read all the books of Er Gen except A Will Eternal, and then I stumbled upon this series and was overjoyed that something like this exists. Then I read the other review here that praises it so much that the sweetness drips from my display, so I knew that this is a must watch!
By the time I got to the 30 episode I felt that something was off. The main character was absolutely inconsistent and weird, not in a good way that defines a character, but because of the bad writing, and I knew there's something fishy here because Er Gen doesn't do these silly mistakes.
When I encountered the weirdest arc change I have ever seen in my life (the one involving a certain mask and another sect), I knew I have to read the book to see if it was just as weird.
And what do you know - turns out the producers added, removed and revised so much that they butchered the whole plot and made it incomprehensible to anyone with more than two brain cells. Xiaochun is a bipolar crybaby Marty Sue, and every plot twist is a Deus ex Machina with no explanation.
Thank God, Er Gen didn't disappoint, and now I'm really enjoying the book. I recommend to do just that, it's hilarious.
Reginald the Vampire (2022)
I'm pretty sure I like this show
First, I read all the reviews, and they are underwhelming, to be honest. So I thought what a shame, I really like shows about vampires... Then I thought, to hell with it, why not try it out myself. So I watched the first episode and liked it, and then all the 7 episodes, which are out right now. And I don't regret a thing!
The characters are likeable, and the show doesn't bore me like most do nowadays, it's quite fun to watch. I don't get where all the hate comes from, I haven't even noticed any obvious and annoying agenda moments, which is good in my book.
Overall, I get bored easily, and this show does entertain me enough for me to write this review to dissuade others from overlooking Reginald's story! Of course, it's not perfect, but what is? The most important thing is, if you enjoy it or not.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
I don't understand the overall rating above 7
With my finger on the "Right Arrow", pressing it repeatedly, I somehow got to the end of the 3-rd episode. The entrance of Rosamund Pike made me laugh out loud, and as I saw in the other reviews, it wasn't such in the books. Ridiculous.
The "diverse" cast ruins the whole "same origin" stuff they talk about when Mat (was it?) starts to sing the song out of the blue. If they are "old blood" and were conserved in those mountain for who knows how long, why are there people so distinctly black and white? They should all be mixed at least, or just one race. They say that racism is bad, but isn't it already racism to think that the race matters so much that you need to have every one of them represented in the cast, even though it's dumb story-wise?
I haven't read the books, and I'm not sure if I want to, considering this feels like the same old "good vs evil" and whatever. I might be wrong, and the books aren't like that, but the show runners really turned me off from picking up the source.
Scenery is nice, those are the two stars that I gave. The rest is bland and boring, targeted at the dumb, loud twitter audience who matter the most nowadays.
I'm still waiting for something fresh in the fantasy genre. Maybe I should start writing a book myself, where none of the characters seem evil from the first glance, as they never are in reality.
