Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: The Murmuring (2022)
Best episode of the series!
I have to admit I was disappointed in this series as a whole. Amazing visuals and production value. The theme was always realized. I always felt what I was supposed to feel.
However, most of the episodes were just gross and unappealing to me. The worst was Witch's House. Totally disrespectful to Lovecraft's work imo.
This episode was by far my favorite. Didn't expect to be moved emotionally by one of these episodes. I'm genuinely scared of ghost stories, but this one was actually tame and I appreciated that. The actors did a great job showing the effects of grief on a marriage. I appreciated that the male character wasn't turned into a antagonist like is often done in stories that center on a female protagonist.
The last scene with the birds was glorious imo. She felt that freedom she always spoke of. Bravo!
This Is Us: The Car (2018)
Could have been the end of the show
When Rebecca drives across the bridge without Jack that felt like the perfect ending. I enjoyed This Is Us as it progressed in subsequent seasons, but in the terms of the arc this is the true climax of the show.
P. S. Just finished watching the episode called "Miguel." 😭
Don't Look Up (2021)
I wish they had to guts to poke fun at all ideologies
"Don't Look Up" is a satirical take on our society and our inability to actually engage with truth rather than look to confirm what we presuppose to be true. It's a well-acted, smart movie that I can't say is too funny or enjoyable. I would call it ironic. My issue with the film is that if it was made with the desire to help us consider our inability to listen to truth when it doesn't confirm or biases, why not poke satirical holes in the various "brands" of group think present in our society? The "bad guys" resembled Trump and his supporters and Elon Musk. So I say it was a missed opportunity to challenge everyone to consider what biases they have that might need a little "peer review."
Eternals (2021)
Weird and not appropriate for families
This is less of a marvel movie and more of a moral tale for humanity with deep themes of love and violence. As such, this movie is just not fun. Somehow, Black Widow has a lot to say but was entertaining. This one just sucks.
And to parents of younger kids: steer clear of this one.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Why the hate? Luke Skywalker shines!
I really don't understand the negativity directed toward this movie by many Star Wars fans. I only found a few things to be negative about:
1) BB-8 was too silly
2) Hated the whole casino sub plot
3) Bombers in space??
4) Leia flying in outer space?
Everything else was awesome. Easily the best non-OT Star Wars movie. Way to go Rian Johnson!
