Strange remake.
24 February 2022
I'm quite surprised none of the reviews mentioned that this film is a full remake of another Mitchum film from 1955 "Man With The Gun".. Same exact story with very minor changes and same problem : not much action while waiting for the final showdown which by the way was much better handled in "Man With The Gun".

But any movie with Robert Mitchum or Angie Dickinson is worth seeing.

And here you have them both.

If this is a western then Wonder Woman 84 is Citizen Kane

Absolutely nothing to save. Boring, ridiculous, pathetic.

I can't believe the reviews.

People should try and learn what a good movie is, and what's a film director's job.

Hopeless. I couldn't pass the 20 minutes mark.

Wehre's the rhythm ?

You know you're in trouble when what is sold as an action film has an intro that lasts just over one hour. You've seen this story many times but that's not a problem if the game is played the way it should. Unfortunately here the director seems to be a little too proud of himself and so every scene lasts way too long to give him time to show how good he is at creating a mood. Wrong. No action, no mood, no credibility. Too bad.

I was going to write a review...
28 December 2020
But then I saw what the others had to say about the film. So I guess there's not much more to say. Indredibly bad. I'll just add one thing, any Wonder Woman film or for that matter any super hero film where you have to wait over one hour before he/she appears has got to be seriously flawed. There's only one good thing in this movie;. too bad it occurs after the end credits . 30 seconds of pleasure after 2 hours and 30 minutes of pure pain.

Ramfat's review is extremely generous.

This is the battle of the century between director, actors, script writer, producers and whoevere took part in this ...hum... movie (?). A battle to find out who was the worst. Let's forget about the director since obviously he was not there during the shooting. So as a result the actors are left to themselves to try and act as much as they can. Olga Kurylenco is not the best actress in the world, but compared to the rest of the casting she's a real Meryl Steep. Right from te beginning everything goes wrong, vigilante films need a sort of internal logic or credibility. Apparently they forgot this rule. Bronson's film (whetever you can think about them) had an urgency and the kind of credibility that made you get into the film. Denzel Washington's The Equalizer had it (at least in the first film). And if you want to reverse the paradigm and have a woman take the role of the vigilante, take example on Salt which had everything this kind of movie needs to succeed. Well, no need to go on. It's an absolute disaster.

One of a kind
22 February 2016
This film started with the best intentions from the director. The star of the film was to be Marlon Brando eventually coupled with Richard Burton. But as it often happens in the movie world something went wrong somewhere and chaos followed. Bogarde reluctantly agreed to make the film (against a promise to get freed from his J. Arthur Rank contract), but he did not get along with John Mills (signed at the last minute) at all. So he decided, as a sort of retaliation against the company, the actors and the director to ham it up as much as he could. And he certainly could. Mylne Demongeot told me during an interview that the shooting in a small Spanish town was absolute murder, with everybody hardly speaking to one another. And yet And yet what came out of these hectic premises is a unique movie. I must confess that I have a soft spot for these one of a kind movies. Films that have almost no equivalent and which seems to have a life of their own despite whatever intentions led to their existence. Naturally enough these films generally get panned upon their releases and sometimes gain a real stature years later. Two films come to mind in this category, and I was lucky enough to see them both when they were first released, Michael Powell's Peeping Tom and Charles Laughton's The Night of The Hunter. I can still remember the deadly reviews that greeted these two films before their long overdue rehabilitations. Another handful of films could find a place in this category. But getting back to The Singer not The Song, without being on the same level as the Laughton or Powell's films, it nevertheless fits in the list of neglected "sort of masterpieces". Everything is this film is not what it seems, as a matter of fact it may be the only film where the story being openly told is in absolute contradiction with what we are shown. Almost every line spoken is continuously belied by the understatement it carries. Right from the beginning everything in the story appears improbable. Here we are in a small Spanish town where a ruthless anti-clerical bandit keeps getting rid (one way or another) of the local priest lest he should turn the town people against him. OK, we have the regular triangle, the bad guy, the good guy, a priest, and the girl. And what we witness is the old story of the good guy fighting the villain with the pretty girl thrown in in the middle of this tension. Except that this film turns the whole story upside down and we are left to witness the villain falling for the priest in front of the bewildered girl who cannot decide which one she wants. We somehow get two stories fro the price of one. No doubt that Dirk Bogarde does everything is his power to accentuate the homosexual tension. Clad in tight fit black leather costume he is absolutely over the top, perfect in every gesture, every look, every motion. His willingness to make fun of the whole story just add to the ambiguity of the script. Whereas he thought he would show his contempt for the project, in fact he brings it to a level probably nobody foresaw. If you are open to unusual film (and a British western is already unusual) this is an absolute must where the subtext is only acknowledged with the last sentence of the film (its title as a matter of fact). I have watched this movie many times and have always found something new to appreciate. Don't miss it. A real shame that the British DVD is pan and scanned. A French company has just released the original scope copy and it really shows the brilliant use of the location by Roy Ward Baker.

Is this really an actress ?
22 February 2016
Yes this film has flaws and it's not the greatest film ever made, but it's an incredibly emotion packed movie. I won't go into details about the story and the qualities, others have done it at length. I just want to say that it is one of the very few instances where the emotion does not really come from the story but from the characters. And specifically from Saoirse Ronan. This girl comes from another planet. What she is able to convey in this film is just incredible. The feelings, the pain, the joy, the doubts, the anger, I can't remember this quality of acting in a long long time. And I'm still wondering : "is she really an actress ?". I don't think so, the word has not been invented yet for what she is. It's beyond acting and maybe beyond perfection. You have to see this film to believe it.

Incredible

My God !!! Clayton Moore come back… Quick !! A would be western made by someone who saw too many Italian spaghetti westerns and would have been better inspired watching John Ford, Delmer Daves, Howard Hawks, Robert Aldrich and so many others. These directors knew what action was all about and how to show it on screen. Mixing action and humor requires a kind of talent that is definitely lacking here and which is replaced by hysterical editing and cutting. A sure sign of poor directing. Whoever got the idea of turning The Lone Ranger character into a stupid mindless moron should be sentenced to watch this film over again. What can anyone say about Johnny Depp ? Preposterous would be the best word to describe his character. There really is nothing more frustrating than a film that doesn't know where it's going and what story is is telling.
