Reviews
Atomic Twister (2002)
It'll blow you away... or not.
***MINOR SPOILERS***
Well I am really quite the sucker (hehe) for movies about tornadoes. The best part for me in the Wizard of Oz is the black and white twister segment at the start. So naturally I just had to watch Atomic Twister when it came on the telly late one night recently. OK so I wasn't expecting to see another Twister (one of my fave movies), but I wasn't expecting such a riot either. This movie is absolutely hilarious. I don't want to get into all the technical flaws because others have already pointed them out. But I have to say how much the character- stalking twisters cracked me up. Poor Stu. He was such a nice guy and then his death was met with little more than half a minute of false sorrow by his friends before they all forgot about him. What really irked me was when the characters would waste time apologising to each other when they were in crisis situations!! And how the tornadoes appeared to be silent stalkers- aren't twisters meant to sound kinda windy (especially when they are about 10 metres away form the characters)?? I could go on and on, but just see this ridiculous movie for yourself if you're in need of a laugh.
Big Bite (2003)
best sketch comedy show
I think this sketch comedy show is FANTASTIC and it beats all the other Australian ones. The cast show real talent.
I must especially commend Chris Lilley for his original, one of a kind characters. Extreme Darren and Mr Gee always make me laugh out loud.
Pirate Islands (2003)
The Islands will lure you in!
The last episode of Pirate islands was just shown here today (June 30) in Australia, and now that i have seen out the series I realise how much i was addicted to the show. So much so that I got my brother to tape the episodes which i couldn't be home for, and I was so distraught when he couldn't tape them for me and I had to miss out. How obsessive!
There is something which allures one to this show. Once you start watching you're addicted. i don't know if it's the whole concept that's alluring (how crazy, to be zapped into a computer game!- yet how fun!), if it's the characters (I feel Oliver Ackland might have something to do with it), or if it's the storyline and the adventure that comes with it. Whatever it is, the whole thing comes together perfectly and makes for very lighthearted, pure fun.
It's great escapism- fantasy is the best genre.
I am happy to discover that many 16, 17 even 20 something year olds love this show, despite it being a kids show. That's how cool it is.
I hope it comes out on DVD...
I can't wait for series two!
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Don't know how it compares to the original, but it's a feast for the eyes at least.
Considering that I haven't seen the whole of the original Matrix, I still left the cinema after seeing its sequel feeling mindblown.
I cannot and will not compare it to its precedent, but Revolutions had enough to leave me wanting more Matrix.
*spoilers ahead* What made this movie so mindblowing? Firstly, obviously the action. That scene where Neo fought against multiple Agent Smiths swarming at him like a cockroach infestation was terrific- although I must say it did drag on a bit. The (lengthy) car/motorbike sequence along the freeway was the highlight of the film for me. The visual effects here are simply stunning.
I felt quite engrossed with the characters. The Neo, Trinity, Morpheus trio are so charismatic. Agent Smith had me intrigued with his "clones". There were many interesting characters along the way, noticably The Oracle, The Twins, and Persephone.
Although at times the plot concept was a little uncertain (possibly only because I haven't fully seen the original) visually speaking it was awesome.
However, even a movie as fantastic as this can't be without its faults.
I feel that the dance party scene in Zion was unnecessary. It seemed a bit odd with Morpheus presiding above the people delivering this grandiose speech. it reminded me of something out of Starwars perhaps, particularly with the costuming. It was also a bit too much with the sex. i think that a movie of this unique style shouldn't have needed that sexual element in it.
What really cracked me up was Neo flying through the air at one stage with his fist out like Superman!
Having read other reviews, many seem to think it isn't quite as good as the original, but seeing as I can't really compare the two, after seeing Reloaded I am totally engrossed by all things Matrix and can't wait till Revolutions.
