The Prince of Egypt (1998)
I used to think this was a mesterpiece...
Now I KNOW, it truly is a masterpiece. Moses; an important character for Jewish, Christians and Islam people. Atheists know who Moses is, if they believe it or not is irelvent. This story is universal. You dont have to br religious to know a good story, in this case a fantastic one.
This retelling of the first half of the book of Exodus does take a few creative liberties, but the tale and purpose are still cristal clear. The biggest difference being how he was raised and the relationship between Moses and Pharaoh. Something the film handles so well you kinda wish this relationship was on Exodus.
This is one of the best animated films of all time, from the visuals, to the voice acting, characters, story and soundtrack that rivaling of disney's best. This is a family movie that is not scared of being dark. (Blood, death of adults and children)
Prince Of Egypt (1998) is a masterclass on how to portray religious media without being preachy or on the nose. If this movie makes you curious into learning about faith, great! If it doesnt, at least you can agree you saw a masterpiece in motion.
Hopefully this isnt the last masterpiece created based on biblical scripture. Biblical lore is huge and there are many many more stories waiting to be portrayed.
Wilfred: Kiss Me Kat (2010)
Season 2 is better.
Kiss Me Kat is my favorite episode of the OG Australian Wilfred. After watching the FX american version, (which is amazing) I can't help but rewatching this version more. If I had to compare both versions, I would say:
American version is like a live action: BoJack Horseman.
AU version is more like a live action: Family Guy (in its prime)
AU is PEAK surrealism comedy, and this episode specially shows why. Kat is a character that I would have loved to see more of in either version. Wilfred falls in love with a cat and its really funny. More animal characters like these were lacking in the USA version, where he was the only "animal" in a costume character.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared (2022)
Sesame Street + The Twilight Zone =
Lets get creative! A show where 3 puppet characters live in a sitcom like setting and little by little its revealed that everything is not quite what it seems. (WandaVision done right), A surreal and unsettling story hidden as a fuzzy and colorful comedy.
The original YouTube series was not bad, a good horror story. This is way better!!!
1. The GOOD:
- All 6 episodes do have continuity with eachother and tell a much more surreal, comedic but depressing story. By the end of the season you feel jawdropped, intrigued and saddened.
The production is done perfectly, great puppetry, settings, animation, claymation, voice acting.
The unnerving feeling is always present, anything creepy might happen at anytime.
Episode 1 is the funniest, Episode 3 is the scariest, Episode 6 is the best one.
2. The MID:
- Something I didn't quite love was the inconsistency of the characters, example:
Yellow Guy is always consistent.
Even though I have that critique, the reason I don't give it a 9/10 is because still, those 2 episodes were great. Episode 5 was Amazing!
3. The BAD:
- I have nothing negative to say. The "bad" is still great.
I want more of this show, I hope more people see this show. Best surreal program of the decade.
This deserves an Emmy.
Season 2 is a must.
Batman Returns (1992)
If A24 made a superhero film.
I never grew on the burton batman films, my generation was the nolan movies. Also, I only saw the burton movies way after watching almost every superhero movie ever at the time, including Avengers Engame.
Maybe thats why I enjoyed these films so much. It just felt..."Refreshing".
But something about Batman Returns is just the best.
- This is a movie about Catwoman & Penguin. These villains are way more developed than any other superhero movie villain in the last 10 years. I love them, its basically their movie. Batman/Bruce Wayne is only in it for a total of 30 minutes screentime (this is a 2 hour movie).
- Here, bruce starts the movie brooding, alone and misterious, and at the end hes brooding, alone and misterious. Bruce doesnt develop, he's damaged. And nothing changes.
I really really like that. For some reason it feels right.
- Catwoman is the best. After Ledger shes the best and most iconic live action DC villain we have ever gotten.
- TONE!!! ATMOSPHERE!!! THIS IS GOTHAM CITY.
The colors, the vibe, the structures. There is no such thing as a better Gotham city than this one.
- Its very dark, very messed up. Its slower than most superhero movies today.
So, Dark. Great Acting. Scary Score. Depressing Ending. A burning body. Penguins with rockets. Sexy Cat Lady.
This is A24 before A24 was a thing.
Kimetsu no Yaiba: Never Give Up (2022)
Best KNY episode as of yet.
This was intense. A very dark episode as well, almost felt like a different show. Uzui Vs Upper 6 in this chapter definitely blew out of the water this shows other amazing Fight scenes (Hinokami & Akaza Vs Rengoku)
S tier animation, amazing tone. Tengen is a top tier Hashira.
The Green Knight (2021)
Visual Storytelling is NOT lazy writing.
This film is a masterpiece. All the answers are there, but are either in metaphor, visuals or color representation. This is a film for people who look for more, not expect things to fall for them.
Plus it's a journey story! I felt watching this movie like when I first read "The Alchemist" "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" and "Life Of Pi" all excellent novels.
This movie has layers. A movie about growth, maturity, life purpose, and realistic consequences.
This is one of the most memorable A24 films of all time and one of the best fantasy films of all time. It's going to be like a fine wine, gets better with time.
10/10. A soon to become classic.
