Licorice Pizza (2021)
Eh
I'm not really sure how this made it to completion. I love movies that don't go anywhere, but this really was a jumbled mess.
That, and the fact that it was about the relationship between a 25 or 28 year old woman and a 15 year old boy, makes me really wonder how this happened. Didn't anyone involved think that this was kind of a bad idea? Not just because it's majorly inappropriate, but just that it's fairly unlikely in the real world - outside of the odd teacher/student thing, that is rightly viewed as creepy and wrong. But for some reason is celebrated here.
Maybe the fact that the characters didn't come off as or act their real ages, and almost appeared to be the same age, maybe around 18-20, made it seem to some that it was ok. But the movie ends with them kissing. So, is that the beginning of a sexual relationship?
I don't know, maybe it was intriguing to others. It wasn't to me.
Band of Brothers: Bastogne (2001)
Fake snow
I tried with the suspension of disbelief here, but anyone who has experienced real snow and forests will realise quickly that something about this episode is off.
It's overcast and snowing, but there's never any additional accumulation. There's just a dusting on the ground, that never changes. And later in the episode, there's sun shining on the faces of a couple of the actors but it's still snowing.
I never got the feeling that this was real, it always looked like a set to me - which is too bad, because the rest of the series scenery looked pretty real to me.
Apart from that, as someone else mentioned, there always seemed to be one wounded man who got all of the attention from the medic, and then he'd accompany him to town. All while there's still action going on, and potentially more men being wounded.
Great series, but this episode is a miss for me.
The Stranger (2020)
Too many things going on here
I'd just read Coben's book, so I decided to see how it translated to the screen. Well, it's not very much like the book, except for the main plot line, along with many of the main characters.
For some reason it was decided to add the side stories involving the kids, many who weren't even in Coben's novel - Dante's injury, the rave, Olivia's illness, the llama, etc.
Also, do not really understand the multiple side stories and surprises - Johanna's impending divorce, Martin killing his wife, the Stranger being Martin's wife's daughter and Ed Price's daughter and also Adam's sister.
Too many things going on, red herrings, new characters, and an ending that doesn't work as well as in the novel.
Marcella (2016)
Way too complicated
The basic concept was decent, and the series started out well, but then turned into a mess.
I don't know why it was necessary to have multiple plot twists, along with her blackouts, memory loss, hypnotherapy, etc. But maybe that's the gimmick to this series.
Also, there are way too many minor characters who we're shown, who eventually tie into the main plot, but then their stories are just discarded.
I'm giving up, not going to bother with season 3, after seeing the direction it looks like they're going. Good luck,
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
ok, but long, and unfulfilling
Great scenery, decent acting, but not very likable characters and nothing close to a resolution at the end.
Would've worked better if they'd come up with a better ending, not necessarily resolving everything, but some sort of character growth might've been nice. I mean, after everything, Lee is still broken, and no closer to coming to terms with things.
And Patrick is a bit of jerk. Yeah, I feel for him losing his dad, but he just seems like a spoiled, entitled, and self-centered brat throughout the movie.
Maybe a bit of cutting down on those long drawn out pauses and scenes with just Lee staring into space, would've helped too.
