Un chien andalou (1929)
Unique
This is one of those movies that make me glad I don't need to give a rating to comment as I have seen " Un chien andalou" twice now and I still have no idea what to rate it. I don't even know if one can rate it. "Un chien andalou" has no story or any kind of clear message, it contains no real characters or even a context for the things that are happening.
The movie was made by the surrealist artist Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel and if you know anything about painters that first name should give you a good indicator that your in for a unique experience.
Have I gotten anything out of seeing it? I don't know, but I'm sure I will not forget the experience anytime soon. And therefore I recommend "Un chien andalou" because I doubt there ever has nor ever will be anything like it.
Ni liv (1957)
I'm stunned...
When walking in my local video shop I saw a copy of this incredible movie. I didn't have high expectations before watching it since Norwegian cinema is, well... But thankfully I was proved mistaken, very mistaken.
The movie is a true story about Jan Baalsrud a Norwegian resistance fighter. It takes place in 1943 in a Nazi occupied Norway. The movie starts of slow, but when something goes horribly wrong all his comrades are killed and Jan must alone find his way to the Swedish border. Along his way hes assisted by many common people. And in the end, the enemy is no longer the Nazis, but the cold nature.
Ni Liv is a tale of mans strength. You can't believe it when you see all Jan went through and if this movie doesn't leave you impressed, very few tings will. It's sad this movie isn't better known because it truly is a masterpiece! I recommend it highly.
Corpse Bride (2005)
Beautiful movie with few faults
Tim Burtons Corpse Bride is an amazing film. I do not know why I love it, there's just something about it. I bought it on DVD about a year after it was released because it had gotten a lot of good reviews. And my was I stunned. I watched it 3 times the first day i got it and another time the next day. It was just amazing.
Its about the story of Victor who is to marry Victoria. But, after a series of unfortunate events he finds himself married to the corpse bride Emily instead. It has the flavor of being made for kids, but is a movie for all ages. And I'm not usually the one to watch children's movies.
Both Johnny Deep, Helen Bonham Carter and Emily Watson offers some really good voice acting. One can feel that the voices really fits. The rest of the actors offer some strong voice acting too. My favorite would be Christopher Lee as Pastor Galswell. but how does it work? Why would we need so simple movie-making techniques in a time of computer animation? Because it ads a interesting feeling. And if your wondering, yes, even though its not CGI its still beautiful.
The voice acting is well done, the story is good and interesting, its got many good jokes and its entertaining from beginning to end. And thats what really matters. I would definitely say you should see Corpse Bride. The only fault with this movie is thats it to short. Sill, a must see in my book.
