Draft Day (2014)
American movies...
Viewed Draft Day several times. I'm done.
It's supposed to be a football movie, but here what makes it a typical expected U. S. movie : 1- why the 'girlfriend-on-payroll' ? 2- Why the father's ashes ON DRAFT DAY ??? 3- Why a clumsy new intern ON DRAFT DAY ??? 4- Why the father's will reading ON DRAFT DAY ??? 5- Why the grumpy mother and the ex-wife present ON DRAFT DAY ??
6- And to end it all with a tear and a snif-snif : the girlfriend comes out of the closet and announces she is PREGNANT !!!
American movies have become so predictable they often appear to have the same script. And when you present a tough-guy football movie, there is no need to mix family, death, in-laws and pregnancy all rolled up in one ? MAKE IT A FOOTBALL MOVIE ! That hard, hey ?
Law & Order: Punk (1998)
Episode staff got it very wrong.
Law & Order S9,E8 'Punk' : a 1998 episode I'm viewing again on Prime. I probably saw the first presentation 25 years ago without noticing anything wrong. Now a senior, I realize I've become more attentive to details, more observant of mistakes, and less forgiving.
'Candy' is a young female inmate testifying in criminal court. Her acting is fine but something struck me as bizarre : her eyebrows are perfect, her eyelashes also perfect, her lipstick just perfect. Since when do inmates get to benefit from a professional makeup artist before going to court ?
Obviously a blunder by the support staff. They got the principal inmate character right (no makeup at all), but goofed for the other.
As I said, I notice more with time passing. Pros must act like Pros, and supervisors must supervise...
I Came By (2022)
Police or director incompetent ?
At the beginning of a new movie, I tend to give the script, staff and actors the benefit of the doubt. But when a big mistake appears. I do not pardon because it disconnected me from the film.
Upon the larger police force's second visit the judge's home, the apparently smart supervisor detects the hidden jail cell in the basement. She also questions the peep hole looking inwards. Then the mighty goof : she omits to call the CSI cavalry to turn the room upside down for clues (blood etc.)
Such a mistake is so far from reality that I lost interest...
Movie people, why can't you correct these nonsenses ?
Argo (2012)
Typical USA
Some reviewers refer to 'Action', 'Thrill', 'Emotion'...They probably are too young to know the real facts. History and truth matter. Canada hid these U. S. Embassy workers, made them passports, bought them airline tickets, took them to the airport. But as a typical American movie, truth doesn't matter. What does is the effect, the impact on the viewer. So sad and infuriating at the same time.
So when a U. S. movie starts by stating 'Based on a true story' (or something
like it), I'm already on the defensive. I'll try to guess what are lies and wonder why it needs to be that way...
Jack Ryan (2018)
Fake
Hi. I'm becoming more and more intolerant when obvious mistakes appear in a movie/series. Perhaps it is due to my 7 decades of accumulating bits of general knowledge here and there.
Within 10 minutes of the very beginning, a middle age mother (Hanin) is playing soccer with her children. Long robe and veil, as expected
in an arabic/muslim setting (Syria). Except one damning thing : she's wearing eye makeup and lipstick as if in an L. A. studio ! Unseen and unacceptable in her society, outdoors in daytime !
My conclusion : this series is badly written, not researched adequately, and will be a waste of time.
Please understand : I am not defending a culture vs another. I'm just pointing out how unreal the scene is, specially regarding the wife of an important leader.
Finally : the typical greeting in Islam wishes peace. Said wish is returned, ALWAYS. But when the fair-haired guest greets his new hosts, the duo fails to convey the greeting back ! Muslim and basic social protocol breached !
Whether a movie portrays an arabic/muslim, asian, hispanic or whatever context, staff must research, study and learn all it can to at least make it look real. Laziness, incompetence or bad judgment will tarnish the visuals and make (older) viewers like me jump off the train as soon as it leaves the station !
Blacklight (2022)
Law of Physics.
A muscle car speeding at 95 m.p.h. On a curved country road. No indication it is being followed. However, the driver (Neeson) keeps staring and adjusting his rearview mirror.
Excepts it last 7 seconds, then another 5 ! The main actor should have crashed and died at the very beginning of this movie !
Script, editing, acting...? Some in the industry are not doing their job, and viewers like myself turn off after less than 10 minutes.
Notwithstanding the exponential rate of released movies, (several with our preferred actors), viewers appear to be more demanding. Good for all of us. I just hope the staffs take our reviews into account !
Jason Bourne (2016)
Obvious mistake
I share many reviews. This is not the best Bourne of the series. In french we say : 'stretching the elastic'.
What irritates me the most is when I can't determine if an obvious flaw jumps out or if it was made voluntarily. I'm referring to the scenes in Athens during
the violent protest. Nicky realizes she's hunted but she fails to cover her
dangling blond hair ! No one else but her in Greece has hair like that ! She's a target and manages to remain one.
Again, a matter of script, directing or judgment, I can't tell but that's when I jump off the train. Sad.
Sicario (2015)
gender bias
I love the Sicario Collection and watch it every few months.
However, with time, I get more and more irritated by the way the script
handled Blunt's character. She gets invited into a special ops group
but showes anger after she had to shoot a sicario threatening her ???
Then, after the tunnel fighting, she punches a colleague !
Then, she threatens with her gun Del Toro in the middle of a delicate situation. He has no choice but to shoot her twice !
She points her gun at him once again at the very end.
(And this is the guy who saved her life from a deranged and dirty american cop !)
Who needed a Mother Theresa in this movie ?
As the single female operative, why must she be portrayed as a gun-happy
hysterical unbalanced woman ??????
As if Villeneuve wanted to prove once and for all that women have no business in the fight and war against drugs. Too obvious.
Baby Ballroom (2017)
Chippendales and Baby Ballroom cannot coexist !
Safe 2022 to all readers. I'm in the process of viewing the full series of BABY BALLROOM for a second time. And for this second time, I once again felt outrage when reaching Season 1, Episode 8, 31 : 40.
Coach Warren, husband and father, was given the O. K. by his wife Jane, mother of the triplets, to explore and display his very discernable homosexual fantasies.
The Ballroom couple's private life is none of my business, but when Warren chooses to bring half-naked body builders in golden bikinis to the school's fiesta, there's something VERY WRONG ! Some of the youngest attendees were four years old and a few parents expressed their discomfort.
So Warren, can't stay in the closet all the time ? Talk to Jane. BUT don't you bring minor children/students in contact with your world of painted musclemen in tiny bikinis ! Morally wrong is not even a strong enough expression to express my sentiment.
Perhaps a future episode will see Warren bringing the young dancers to a strip club ? I hope you get my point. Had I been one of the fathers at Warren's fantasy, it would have been the last time... Be safe.
