Moonfall (2022)
Not Armageddon
I was hoping this would be the new Armageddon, or 2012, or Deep Impact.
But the movie is all over the place. It fails at character development and building up tension.
I felt abolutely no investment throughout the entire movie. Neither for the characters nor for the plot itself.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021)
Much better than anticipated
I must admit, when I first heard of the concept of an animated Witcher movie, I was leaning rather negatively towards it. But my expectations where very much overthrown.
The writing was superb. The movie draws inspiration very much on the style of storytelling from the original books. And consequently it develops story and characters much better than the real life Netflix series.
The lore is not always consistent with the books - for example the Witcher medalion, which is supposed to vibrate when magic is being used in its proximity, as opposed to the medalion vibrating when generally monsters are close now.
Or Witchers loosing any sort of emotions due to their mutations, which certainly is not the case here.
The pacing sometimes is too quick. Some scenes could be extended a tiny bit in length to let the viewer breath in what just happened, because stuff is happening extraordinarily quickly at times. The voice actors generally do a very good job, but at times I had problems following what they said because they would speak a little incomprehensible (for a non native speaker at least).
All in all I must say I am very positively surprised, and I cannot wait to see more! The movie focused on the hardships that made the books so fantastic - a world filled with horror, dread, despair, racism, xenophobia, etc. Its a shame that the original series didn't get this type of writing.
Rick and Morty: Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort (2021)
It was good, but...
... somehow something still feels off about the show. The episode certainly comes way closer to the original R&M than the last 3 episodes. But somehow I have the impression that this episode still lacked substance.
The pace is just murderous. I really need to focus on what's going on in order to keep track of the story. Somehow Morty is not involved, at all. The episode doesn't even feature a side story containing him, nor the family. It feels as if the story and the weight to it should have been a double episode.
And still the humour just seems to be a bit too uninspired.
Ofc, many now write that this episode is a 9/10 or a 10/10 masterpiece, only because Rick is seen blasting himself through the story with some vague pseudo-science references, with and plenty references to past seasons, and everyone goes "OMG! That's a reference to another episode that I know of!!! 10/10!!!".
But in terms of R&M, I there still is something that is off....
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Good movie? - No. Good action/comic movie? - Yes.
The movie certainly is no cinematographic masterpiece. But it did keep me entertained indeed!
I would rather give it a 6 because I think the movie starts to fall flat within the last third, but I gave it a 7 because of the boldness the directors took.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Awful Historical Distortion
I had to give it a 3 because of its heinous historical misinformation/fabrication - entertainment or not.
Rick and Morty: Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion (2021)
What really grinds my gears
Here are some things that made me like R&M in the first place, and things I enjoyed within the development throughout the shows timeline, that were unfortunately tossed aside this season:
Rick's deduction: what made the show so appealing to me was Rick's capability of realising situations and circumstances just by following a logical thread and using the power of deduction. It was a complete antitheses to today's Hollywood movies. And that's what made the show so refreshing - it didn't insult my intelligence, it empowered it.
Randomness: My favourite episode this season was E3 - many hated it, and I cannot understand why. It was like a typical episode from season 1-3. It took something very popular, showed it's obvious stupidity, ridiculed it, ridiculed it even further by just using fecal humour to make it look ridiculous, and was completely random at times. Plus, it showed different planets and species and how they actually are: "The planet is going to be destroyed in five zip-zops" - I loved it!
Character development: I very much liked where Jerry's character was going the last seasons. He is lame, I get it, and needs to stay this way, because this is one of the contributing factors of the side characters. But I love the bee-keeping hobby for example. It's a genuine hobby, something completely different to Jerry's usual lameness. A hot chick friend of summer even wanted to engage physically with Jerry because of it - I was hoping they would go along this path, spice things up, make it interesting, develop Jerry a bit further. But no, unfortunately in this season Jerry is stuck in a repeating pattern of just being himself - he has turned into slapstick, which is a point I will critique further along.
Or Jerry dating the hot alien with the avocado shaped head - totally not Jerry as we know him! He was still lame in his own way while doing this, but his character clearly developed an arc. Now it's all gone.
Morty: I kinda like Morty's development in this season. He is sometimes developing behavioral patterns reminiscent of Rick - not always, but in some situations, which is already a good jump compared to Morty from season 1-3. I like it!
Summer: Loved how Summer saved the planet from deep impact just to prove a point to Rick - that was indeed a very Rick-move. And I like to see glimpses of her being more Rick than Morty is.
Now the worst critique - slapstick and stereotypes
This season is all about the characters being themselves - bad copies of themselves. They behave just as you would predict it, which makes the show predictable and consequently lame.
Every character somehow turned into a stereotype of him/herself. It's like a bad 2nd season of a Netflix show - or generally just a 2nd season of a Netflix show.
My advice would be to just take time. The show was best known for utter quality. This season, the quality has gone down sideways. Maybe re-check the last episodes of this season before finishing them, see what can be done better, and just take your time to be creative. You've got endless possibilities with this show - quite literally. You can put Rick and Morty in any conceivable scenario, even a dull 9-5 business job where the show criticises dumb business and office culture and such. It's all possible!
The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown (2021)
7.8
As for the Grand Tour, it is a very good episode. Certainly not a 10, and unfortunately not TG-standard, but it's good - it's on the right track, with some great moments of genuine laughter!
However, I don't know what's wrong with Hammond? Somehow he completely lost his wit within the entire episode? He seems like a teenager who's very nervous and forcefully trying to be funny to cover it up. But maybe that's just his age...
Anyway, keep up the good work, and Mr Hammond, keep up being yourself!
Arrival (2016)
A 6.9
The premise of the movie is very interesting. But the execution is pure Hollywood garbage.
America saves the world - again, and it's actually one person to do it.
The military plays an incompetent and ignorant actor against whom the main protagonist must withstand in order to save humanity.
- sounds cliché? It is.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Rubbish
I'm a massive fan of comedies like the Scary Movie franchise or The Naked Gun trilogy, but this movie is not good at all.
The humour is forced, and that's the problem. It is shoved down your throat. Simply not funny nor entertaining, it's just trying too hard to be funny and thus fails at it miserably.
