Catch and Release (2006)
A movie you want to like, but can't.
Watched this film, not expecting great things (the title certainly doesn't give anything away), and I wasn't disappointed.
My first thought is with the lead female character, if you can't get Julia Roberts, I guess Jennifer Garner will do, It's that sort of film, The only storyline is that a girls' fiancé dies, and she get's on with life.. That's it.
There's no chemistry between the actors, (mind you the stereotypical tubby guy works well with the child, but in a way he probably learnt at acting school), he plays a sort of, never had a woman - Homer Simpson type.
The rest of the cast blend into blandness. You never learn about the dead fiancé, so the sympathy for the grieving girl is never achieved. Her relationship with the male house mates is non-existent. I could go on, but what I really feel is that you start out wanting to get involved in the breath taking scenery and funny innocent lives, but you can't, there's simply no warmth.
There's another stereotypical part in the dead guys mother, which you don't care about.
The one and only highlight is Juliette Lewis. The film soars the minute she appears, suddenly the film is about her, and you care even less about the rest of them.
An amusing and sentimental tear jerker is what I assume this film wanted to be, if it was a book you'd never have bothered to reach the end. Not so much a film to avoid, but life's too short to bother with such a weak film (beautifull locations though).
Roman (2006)
' I'll give it 10 more minutes..'.
I watched and watched and kept thinking 'i'll give it ten more minutes'. The film is obviously low budget, (maybe more financial interest may have hurried it along a bit). The lead actor is great, he plays the role great, definitely the type of guy you'd avoid. However,he sits in his apartment, and he sits, and he sits, and he sits, and he goes to work, and then home, and then work and then home....get the point.
There are people out there like that, and the story line is menacing, but for heavens sake... hurry it along a bit. Surely in the pre-release stage, someone must have started fidgeting in the first ten minutes and said to the producer, 'shall we go back and tweak it to make it more interesting?' I can only assume that the response was...'too late the money's ran out' Enough said, go shopping instead!
Comedy Central Roasts: Comedy Central Roast of William Shatner (2006)
15 minutes would suffice
I really wanted to enjoy this.
I love watching William Shatner.
The host opens up quite well but immediately descends into profanities.
Each 'comic' guest takes his or her turn to insult William Shatner, although one or two of them simply stand up and crack one-liners with no reference to 'Bill' whatsoever.
Maybe I expect too much, but when many of them get up clasping pieces of paper and proceed to read their lines.
I'm afraid if they aren't naturally funny then they shouldn't be there.
I'm no comedian BUT I bet I could get on a stage and knock out 5 or more 'Star Trekkie' or 'TJ Hooker' anecdotes without much bother, and without the need to swear every other word.
Many shots of the audience catch many of them frowning or simply shaking their heads in disbelief.
The 'gay' references were unbelievable; once they started they never stopped.
The whole programme deteriorated into what can only be described as school-boy humour. (Mind you most school boys would rise above this). I would describe most of the comments as infantile.
If you don't mind cringing along with a bunch of has-beens or wannabees's, then watch it. Otherwise, give it a wide berth, I felt embarrassed for them.
Many of the other reviews make fun of the Chevy Chase 'roasting' because he apparently didn't play ball, and didn't 'get' the humour.
Maybe he did 'get' the humour and realised that maybe his career hadn't deteriorated to such a point that he had to put himself up for ridicule.
The bit that really lingers about this crass production is the constant references to gay activity. It was unnecessary and simply served to highlighted the guests own short-comings.
It's the first time I've heard of the guest Andy Dick or Cox. whatever, but what an absolute loser he portrayed himself to be.
Really
.I mean really...give this a miss. Cheap shots, cheap and crude humour. Expect more.
Last Exit (2006)
A movie to just watch. Don't pass judgement or comment, just watch
This is one of those movies that is a bit like a road movie, it moves along at a smooth pace and sort of starts, continues and finishes and at the end you think..blimey!, that may have been a lot about nothing really, BUT, I didn't once look at the clock, I didn't once leave my seat, and just watched and watched.
From the opening scene you think you know the plot, but that's the twist, you actually don't. The whole drama moves at a sufficient pace that you don't keep trying to guess the end, you just watch and learn.
This movie is a bit like a good book, you never want to turn to the last page, you just enjoy the journey and when you reach the end you feel sufficiently satisfied to pick up another.
Most people will be able to empathise with both lead characters, some days just turn out bad and every way you turn just throws up another obstacle. Although it's listed as a 'made for TV' movie, it shouldn't put you off, I've seen far worse at the cinema.
Good movie, great and plausible leading ladies.. Enjoy.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
Feel good movie
A must watch movie for Xmas. Chevy Chase plays the dad with the big heart who's only aim it to provide a great Xmas for his nearest and dearest. It has everything: a white Christmas, great theme tune, parents, in-laws, guests; wanted and 'un-wanted, a large dog and a squirrel!. Yuppy neighbours who 'have it all', but they don't share Chevy's vision of a good Xmas. If you've ever tried to do the right thing and it all seems to go wrong, well this is the the movie for you. However as with other national lampoon flicks, Chevy always has a way of pulling it all together at the end. This really is a film to get snuggled up with the family and enjoy on the week running up to Xmas.
