Pig Pen (2015)
Well it certainly took a turn
I'm writing this review with the movie's budget in mind-
Are there some scenes where the acting was subpar? Yes. Could some of the filmography and special effects have been better? Sure, if you have the budget. Is it a bit one dimensional at times? Certainly. With that being said, I still thought the movie was entertaining. Started off a bit slow; if I had went into it without doing any research, I would've thought it was a drama about a dysfunctional household. However, the third act of the movie definitely threw me off- not because it was totally unpredictable, but it went from being a sad story of a neglected child, to a graphically violent thriller. It's not the best, it's not the worst, but I can undoubtedly say that with the money available, they made it work, and they made it work relatively well. Would love to see another film from this director if he has even double the budget of this movie.
Skinamarink (2022)
Terrifying.
Not for the children that think Hereditary or Midsommar is the scariest movie they've ever seen. Although some will say it's a bit artsy, it's already gained a bit of traction on TikTok. Once it's officially released, I guarantee A24 will have wished they picked this script up. Unsettling camerawork combined with the lack of on-scene characters and tasteful jump scares potentially makes this "The Blair Witch Project" of the 21st century. Anyone who disagrees undoubtedly thinks Insidious is peak horror. Even with a lack of blood, guts, and gore, it still proves to be a very effective psychological horror movie. Don't believe me? Watch for yourself <3.
The Black Phone (2021)
SAW for kids
Director needs to stick to "Sinister". Not any more entertaining than any movie to have come out in the last 5 years, but entertaining nonetheless. Definitely not a horror movie either, unless you factor in the jump scares I suppose.
