Shutter (2004)
Scary movie for hard to scare horror fans
I agree with another comment that said this and "The Eye" were the scariest of the recent Asian horror films. I am always on the lookout for horror movies that are VERY scary because it takes a lot for a horror movie to scare me. In a nut shell, I was hiding behind my pillow during the second half of this movie. I won't say much about it to give anything away, but it is a good ghost story. I saw the original "Ringu" and "Ju-On" movies and didn't think they were that scary.
I thought this was very scary! I think I'll sleep with the light on tonight.
Highly recommended!
Underdog (2007)
Beagles Rule!!!!!
OK, I know this movie is not for everyone and it is definitely not going to win any Oscars. That being said, if you love dogs (especially beagles) and you find talking dog/CGI effects cute (I'll admit it--I own "Cats and Dogs") you will probably like Underdog (which is better than "Cats and Dogs" by the way). The movie is sweet and funny, the dogs are adorable, and I really enjoyed seeing it (even in a theater with a lot of little kids). Yes, there are a few times where the CGI effects look a little fake, but the dogs were so cute I just didn't care. I know there will be many bad reviews of this movie, but I think many dog/beagle lovers will really enjoy watching it.
The Fog (2005)
Everything you've read is true
I just saw this on DVD and I would have to agree with the other reviewers. This really was a terrible movie (and I usually give most horror movies a chance because I love the genre). There were many plot holes that didn't make sense, the only 'scares' were those VERY ANNOYING jump scares that really aren't scary at all. Even if you're a hard core horror fan, DON'T waste two hours of your life with this crap. Rent the 1980 version which is pretty good. SPOILERS AHEAD: Things that didn't make sense and/or were annoying. 1. Why did the one dockland with the dogs have leprosy. 2. Was Elizabeth really stupid enough to fall into the water with the video camera? 3. Was Elizabeth a reincarnated version of the woman with leprosy?
The Howling (1981)
This movie made me like scary movies
I might be biased---I really like werewolf movies and this was one of the first scary movies I ever saw (I was seven and somehow saw this on HBO when I wasn't supposed to be watching rated R movies) I don't know if I still think it's scary because it scared me so much when I was little (for a seven year old it scared the CRAP out of me!!) but I really like this movie.
MILD SPOILER
There are some really scary moments and I think these are the scariest looking werewolves in any movie I can think of (except when Karen turns into a werewolf at the end and looks more like a Yorkshire terrier/Ewok combination) If you like werewolf movies this (along with An American werewolf in London and Ginger Snaps) is a must see.
Frankie and Johnny (1991)
I love this movie!
OK, usually I hate romantic comedies. HATE Them. But for some reason I absolutely love this movie! I usually can't watch it with anyone else because I'm crying my eyes out by the end (when johnny calls the radio station in frankie's apartment). All the other minor characters are fun and the love story (to me) isn't hokey or unbelievable (probably why I usually hate Romantic comedies).
Other than "Pretty Woman," this is my favorite romantic comedy of all time.
I highly recommend this movie. *** out of ****
Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
If you're a fan of either genre, you'll probably like it.
This movie was one I never thought I'd watch--I'm a fan of both NOES and F13th, but "Freddy vs. Jason"? Come on!!! So anyway, there was nothing on TV one night and I started watching this and it was actually OK. (Not great, but OK). If you're familiar with the original genres, it's kind of neat to go back to Elm street and Camp Crystal lake. There are some moments that are unintentionally
(I think) hilarious---"got your nose!" but Jason is still big and scary and Freddy is the same too. I think as long as you don't take this movie too seriously (I'm not sure how you could) you'll enjoy.
I'd give this movie 2.5 out of 5.
When a Stranger Calls (1979)
The first 30 minutes are AWESOME!!!
This is an interesting movie. When I first watched it back in high school it made me never want to baby-sit again. Here is the weird part though---the first 30 minutes are AMAZING--I thought the suspense was built up so well, even if you know what's going to happen, it's still great. Then the rest of the movie is OK, but it kind of goes down hill. I read somewhere that this movie is based on a short which consists of the first 30 minutes only and this makes sense as the rest of the movie feels tacked on.
I would rent this just to see the first part of the movie (then make up your own mind about the rest of it).
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
Good remake
As the original TCM is one of my favorite horror movies, this one had a lot to live up to when I rented it one night. It surpassed my expectations, and there were even some things I liked in it that were better than the original. The spooky, rural atmosphere was very well done, and you get to know the characters much better than in the original.
There were moments where (even for a movie like this) that I thought were a little over the top with the gore (the part with the amputated leg and the salt for instance) that in some ways seemed to trivialize the movie to me and make it not as scary, but more "let's see how gross we can make this".
Overall, I really liked this movie. It had a lot of energy and I was actually on the edge of my seat towards the end. I would recommend watching it--especially if you're a fan of the 1974 version.

The Grudge (2004)
Worth seeing
I couldn't wait to see this movie, as it looked similar to "The Ring" which I thought was really scary. Although I didn't think it was as good as "The Ring," I did think it was pretty scary and worth seeing.
I read several comments talking about the audience being annoying in the theatre--the audience I was in was alittle annoying (laughing at parts where it wasn't funny, etc...) But there were definitely a lot of jump scenes that got everyone in the theatre. If you don't like jump scenes DO NOT see this movie! I really liked the atmospere, scary music, and the creaky noise that girl made gave me the creeps. The plot is definitely not the movie's strong point, but for me, the scary atmosphere was good enough to make the movie worth seeing. I didn't like the ending that much (I thought they left a lot of loose ends--I wished they had developed Bill Pullman's character more, etc..)But after the movie I was definitely apprehensive of stairs, cats, and attics. Not a great movie, but worth seeing.
Black Christmas (1974)
Favorite slasher film ever
Although I love scary movies I have never been a true fan of the slasher genre. I rented this after seeing the good reviews it got on this sight and was very impressed! The music score is very creepy, the villain is completely insane (there are connections to "When a Stranger Calls" (another great movie) with the anonymous phone calls, and the movie is just plain scary--this is coming from someone who didn't think "Halloween" was that scary.
(MILD SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!)
I thought Margot Kidder was kind of annoying, but her death made me afraid to go to sleep for a week!
(END OF SPOILER!!!!!)
Another thing I liked about this movie is that many things about the killer are left up to your imagination (something I think is very scary) You never really find out who he is or why he's doing this.
I recommend this movie highly.
Runaway Bride (1999)
I can't stand this movie!
When I saw this was the movie of the day I just had to comment on it. I hated this movie--it is clichéd, annoying, and just plain stupid!
I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out and being very excited to go because I was such a fan of "Pretty Woman"-- I was sorely disappointed. This is the kind of movie where you're constantly rolling your eyes (it is so cheesy!)-- I haven't hated a romantic comedy so much since "The Cutting Edge."
I do not recommend this movie!
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Good movie (although not as good as the original)
I love the Romero Zombie trilogy, so when I heard there was a
re-make of my favorite movie of the trilogy I was a little
skeptical. This re-make, however, was quite good. There
are interesting characters, character development, scary zombies,
and a lot of gore. I thought the zombies were scarier in this
re-make (they run and are much more aggressive--reminded me of Resident Evil but much better)-- There is a certain magic in the character development that was
present in the original and is lost in this re-make (I'm not
quite sure why)--but I was very impressed with this re-make and
would recommend it to any one who is a fan of scary or zombie
movies.
Godsend (2004)
Not that terrible if there's nothing else at Blockbuster
I had read all the bad reviews of this movie but decided
to rent it anyway because I like scary movies and there was
nothing else at the store I wanted to see. If you don't take
this movie too seriously (the plot is an interesting idea put
into a badly written screenplay) it is mildly entertaining to
watch. Don't expect a lot though--for the most part (except for
Greg Kinnear and Robert DeNiro (why was he in this movie?) the
acting is terrible, and the scares get a little annoying after
awhile.
All in all though, not as bad as I thought it would be.
The Last House on the Left (1972)
Worst Movie Ever!!!
"Nightmare on Elm Street" is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, so I decided to give this early Wes Craven movie a try on Halloween. In a nutshell, I could have taken my parent's old Beta video recorder out in my backyard and made a better movie. It was horrible. H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E!!!! I am not easily offended, and not only was this movie offensive, it was stupid!!!! I'm not going to waste anymore time writing about it, I just hope I can keep someone else from making the same mistake I did.
