Apollo 18 (2011)
Space...hopefully the final frontier!
One of my top 10 worse movies EVER! This movie was not shown to critics before it's release...there was a good reason. Anyone that loved this movie needs to get out more. Wasted time and effort by all. Now I need ten lines of text to tell you more horrible things about this movie. It did cost $5 million to make...that is rare today. It felt like you went to Walmart and purchased a HD video camera and started shooting. Hopefully the actors will be able to continue their careers after this buggar, but I wouldn't list this on my resume unless it is my first movie. We were in a large theater and there were four people watching this jewel...so you know it is Oscar material just waiting for Eddie Murphy to rip this bad boy a new one. We can only wait for Hollywood to go back to the drawing board and try to make a bigger loser but I seriously think their work is cut out for them. If you have anything to do other than watch this movie...then I suggest you do it and save your money.
The Conspirator (2010)
History has beginning and end
Usually a movie of this type tells WHY, where, when...this movie does not tell Why Lincoln was killed. Booth had been planning to kidnap Lincoln, VP, and two cabinet members to exchange for Confederate prisoners...then General Lee surrendered and the war was over...all the prisoners would be free soon, so the plan was in limbo. Then Lincoln made a speech on April 9, 1865 and said that we need to move forward with the black citizens to vote! Booth really took this badly and told people after the speech that would be Lincoln's last speech! So then Booth met with his kidnapping group and announced that the plans were changed from kidnapping to murder...Lincoln was killed but the rest of the targets were spared because the gang was not committed to the death plan when it played out. Very little was brought out about the conspirators...mostly on the woman that owned the boarding house...so why they gave the movie that title was unclear to me. If the movie had started in January when the group was planning the kidnapping and then Booth at the April 9, 1865 speech and showing him at the meeting telling the group about changing their plans to murder and why...it would have made a better movie.
Burlesque (2010)
The Show Goes On
It has been awhile since I have seen a GREAT musical and this is it! It was a long time coming, but this is a great movie. Yes! Cher still has the gift of song and did a great job. This movie is such a part of Cher's career and where she is today...her solo was excellent. The other actors all played their parts to a Tee! Worked well together and it seemed very believable on a story level. Haven't said this often, but will probably go see this movie again..just to hear the music. I will more than likely buy the CD...it is that good. This movie should get an Oscar for best musical...fun evening and can't go wait to see it again....enjoy!
The Next Three Days (2010)
Security starts at home
The movie was pretty good..I did not like the way it shows people how to break into you house and car! This detail does not add anything to the movie and gives nut cases an idea to try these techniques. The ending just left you hanging and it should have shown their new life whether they were proved innocent or not. It was a roller coaster and that was the intent of the action movie. Good acting by all the cast. I liked the acting of the little boy...he did an excellent job...played the part perfectly. I hope there is another movie with this cast that shows what happened to them... then the detective finds the button in the street drain and they are pardoned and it ends with a happy ending and the Dad is reinstated in the college. We will see. Not a waste of time or money...hope it continues
Jackass 3D (2010)
Worse Movie EVER
I cannot believe someone would put money into this project! No script...apparently no writers...just a bunch of guys roaming around with "Watch This" as their motto. Really a low level film in the industry. Hopefully this will be the last Jackass series..Of course it is an MTV production and when I think of quality movies...I think of MTV! These so- called actors need therapy on so many levels. It was in 3D but that was apparently a move to just charge more per ticket...there really wasn't much 3D effect to this movie...you could see it just about as good without the glasses. The five people that purchased tickets for the show I watched...did not like it!
I Want Your Money (2010)
Tell it like it is!
Very simple message backed up with facts and speeches from Democrats and Republicans...I do feel that you can't tax your way to prosperity..it has to come from tax relief to the business sector...Democrats don't realize that and so they continue with stimulus packages. I did like the 9.5 million going to finding Aliens from out of space...and they can't close off the borders to aliens coming through Mexico into America. This is insane government at it's best. When you leave you will know both sides of the political street...Nov 2 is an important date that will decide the course of America into the future...as Obama said, That is what elections are for..
Secretariat (2010)
Great Horse & one of the top athletes of the century!
There were some surprising acting in this movie. John Malkovich played the trainer, Lucien Lauren. Such a character and it would not surprise me if he won an Oscar for this part...just great! The movie needed a character to give the movie some personality and he did a great job. Another actor that stood out to me was Neisan Ellis as Eddie Sweat, the groom. Again he helped add that touch to the movie that helped you identify with this story. Diane Lane as Penny Chenesy, owner, played her part well too and playing roll as owner, wife, mother. The horse, and I assume that there was more than one horse used in this film as Secretarit, did a good job. The horse came across that he knew the fans where there for him. We enjoyed this movie and it makes a great family movie because it is about life and challenges we face.
Devil (2010)
Boo in the shaft
All the actors did a good job but Jenny O'Hara really stood out to me. She has been on a lot of TV programs like CSI, House, and it was nice to see her work on the big screen. This must be the cheapest movie of the year because it was filmed mostly in a 8' x 8' area so there was no need for 3D to sell this movie. But all the acting was just excellent and I was surprised. This may be one of those rare movies were the movie was better than he Preview Ad. This is a simple movie about the question that stalks the meaning of life..is there a Devil? If there is a Devil, then there must be a God because you can't have one without the other..so there is a religious message running below the story line.
Get Low (2009)
Above and beyond your average movie
One of the best movies I have seen in 2010! Great cast and excellent acting by all...Robert Duvall as Felix lead the parade with Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek, and Gerald McRaney (looked great! He has been battling cancer and he seems to be doing well with his recovery). The story had some humor sprinkled around and Bill Cobbs as the Rev Charlie Jackson did an exceptional job. We really enjoyed this movie and it was a surprise. It was not promoted in this area with previews and that is sad because the movie is so rich with the depth of the story. Loved the cars in the movie as well...may have to see it again just to savor the moment.
The American (2010)
Wow! Not what I expected..
Violante Placido was great in this movie! She played the girl friend and did an outstanding job...nice looking lady and hope to see more of her in the future. This was a slow paced movie...very little talking and the whole town seemed gloomy. George was off his game in this movie. I like his movies but this one is at the bottom of the list for me. I haven't seen this much endless driving around since Dragnet movie with Tom Hanks. The wife did not like the nude love scenes which are not common with the Clooney movie in the past. I was just disappointed in the whole project! I hope his next movie will be better than this effort. The violence was the biggest feature of this movie and when someone shots they usually kill their victim...but that gets tiring after awhile..
Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010)
A Delightful Movie
Emma Thompson did a great job as Nanny McPhee again. The make-up is excellent! Miss Thompson is an attractive lady and the make-up department totally changed her for this role..good job there. All the actors did a great job in this film. The young actors worked together and made the movie seem real. The photography was great and the scene with all the poop made me want to check my shoes. Funny...attention grabbing story about real people in tough times. I liked this movie! I hope there is a Mcphee 3, 4, 5 etc. We need more films with this quality and a message that means something. I guess the pigs were computer generated but they looked great...very realistic.
Piranha 3D (2010)
Strange movie!
Richard Dreyfuss was out of this movie before the title rolled so he was a very minor actor to say the least. The Sheriff did a good job in her role, but it just about ends there. if you would like to see boobs in 3D on the big screen then your dream has come true. I hope they get an Oscar for the free floating penis taking up the full screen in 3D then a fish eats it and throws it back up at the audience. Thus my friend is real entertainment at it's best. Someone in the film industry probably still has the smile on their face for this one. The fish, computer generated, looked good...that part was fine but the rest was right there with Debby Does Dallas! Overall a high school quality film project.
The Last Exorcism (2010)
Worse movie I have EVER seen! Bar none...
If you know nothing about film, acting, cameras....then you are in the right place with this film. Someone purchased a cheap camera at Walmart and started filming out of the box. This film is the result of this effort. I won't spoil it for you because I left after 60 minutes! I could not hang until the end and my popcorn was gone...then I was gone. These people need to keep their day jobs! And that us being kind. I don't think acting lessons would help anyone in thus film. The southern Preacher in the film must make all the Christians proud to be presented as a con-man...nothing more. He doesn't believe in demons, but try to help people...
Last Chance Harvey (2008)
Romance never gets old...just dusty from time to time
I liked the Stars in this movie and the story was pretty good. It may be just me but the movie did DRAG A BIT...The previews was good..but those where short lived moments in the film and did not represent the film's true character. I liked it, but I hope they do another one with more ZIP in it next time. The scenes were great...the drama of the family that was shattered by separation over the years and new family members coming in to fill the void...these are things that occur every day in our lives and topics we should be discussing openly...which the movie does. Also, when you get over 50...the party is not over...there is still plenty of fun, excitement, love, sex, and adventure to keep us moving down the road. Good movie...
Gran Torino (2008)
Eastwood is Still The Champion!
This was a very warm and touching film. Not only did it tackle the issue of getting older and the family struggling with what they are to do with you so you get proper care, but it also tackled the RACE ISSUE in neighborhoods and the GANGS...so there were really three movies within this movie and Mr. Eastwood was just excellent. Not only did he Direct, Produce, Starred in Film and sang the final song in the movie...I guess that was a flash back from Paint Your Wagon....yes he was in that too. On top of all of that...Clint Eastwood is in pretty dang good shape for an old Dude...He is my HERO...a great roll model and still moving forward with new projects. Good Job!
Apocalypto (2006)
We speak English in USA
What the heck! Two and a half hours of reading sub-titles...you have to be kidding me. What was Mr. Gibson thinking....The scenery and acting was excellent, but really I rated it a 5 because I just don't like this reading for 2 1/2 hours. Happy Holidays! This is on top of the idea that Mr. Gibson is a very gifted Director...I really enjoy him behind the camera and in front of the camera...so that is not the problem. I do believe that a movie that is not in English should be posted in big letters on the movie posters out front so we would know. I hope his next movie is in English...the language of America and the country down-under....
