The Woman King (2022)

All hail Viola Davis

I enjoyed seeing a movie based in a culture that Hollywood hasn't explored much. There was a great balance of heart and action and the pacing was just right.

I thought Viola knocked it out of the park, as did the other actresses at making us believe they're as fierce as the real life Mahomie female warriors would have been. I have heard a bit that it wasn't the most historically accurate, but it did spark my interest to research a bit more so it has given it's subject matter justice in that sense as I'm sure many others would feel the same after watching it.

Overall I thought this was a great movie unlike anything else that's come out in a while. We have a million European period dramas but this has made me crave more from African history !

Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)

Nicholas Sparks version thriller

The movie was entertaining enough, but I feel it focused too much on the romance. I was really interested in how the main character Kya has survived and thrived in such a hostile environment, also go more into depth of her origin and relationship with the town people. The movie was meant to be a mystery but I feel like it was more of a love story, other than the amazing twist at the end. There were some really amazing characters I wish we could have explored more but I couldn't fault the acting. Loved the cinematography as well.

Perhaps it was just too much detail to fit into a movie, but I'm now excited to read the book !

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Christian Bale is better than this

Did Christian Bale owe someone a favour or something ? I never thought I'd see the day he would join the MCU let alone such a bad entry. His performance was good as expected but not enough of him. Thor has to potential to be the best avenger but this solo feature is not helping his brand. Have we learned nothing from George Clooney's Batman ?

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

I loved it, sue me

I had a lot of fun watching this in theatres. It was a classic blockbuster and I hope more film makers go back to this formula because it's what the people want. Not every movie needs to relate to current political/social climate or leave us deep in thought when we leave the theatre. Sometimes we just want to see some really good looking people in action sequences, with a dash of romance and redemption.

Plus, getting to see Val Kilmer on screen again warmed my heart.

The Dropout (2022)

There was so much build up to the big fall of theranos all for them to just wrap it up in 1 episode. They got really lazy with the storytelling at times, there were too many people to introduce and not enough running time to explain all of their roles. The last few episodes just focused mainly on the Schultz family and the Sunny/Elizabeth relationship as the company got exposed. In the end George Shultz is the only one we get to kinda see realize he'd been hustled. Wish we could have seen the bigger reaction to the fall. Maybe I'm just extra bitter because I had to wait a week between episodes so there was so much time to build up anticipation. Maybe they needed to wait a while for the real life trial to be completed to make this series so we could have a better ending.

I will say that Amanda Seyfried did the best she could. I think the physical characteristics limited her, specifically her height.

I have a hard time even focusing on reviewing the acting because I feel uncomfortable watching this story dramatized. I think this subject should have just stayed as a documentary ( I love you, now die).

First off, I love a little trash reality TV, it's a guilty pleasure but this........ is just something else. You would think this was a Chris Lilley parody. I've never seen a more unlikable group of people on a reality show. Normally there's 1 girl/guy this cringey on a reality show and they're just there for occasional comic relief or to simply as a "background character" but this show is all those people. These are the type who probably bought tickets to fyre festival and ask local business for free stuff in exchange for "free advertising".

Try drinking everytime they say "vibes" and you'll be smashed by the end of episode 1. Do better Netflix.

The Batman (2022)

Pattinson is a great batman but not a great Bruce Wayne

Overall it's an entertaining crime movie, the long run time is justified. The villains were super well done in this movie, the riddler and penguin were a welcome change from an era that's seen many versions of the joker. The only fault is that this movie lacked a strong Bruce Wayne character. What we do see of Pattinson's Wayne is bland and lifeless, we don't really get much of an idea of what he's been doing with his personal life in the 20 years of taking over his family business. We also barely see Alfred and all that goes into "the batman" behind the scenes.

Pam & Tommy (2022)

Not the justice Pam deserves

The makeup/costume department deserve mad props, but at the end of the day I'm just not sure we needed a series on this story. Stan does well , however "the dirt" on Netflix was probably the better adaptation of Lee and I'm just not sure we needed more of this guy. Still shocked we watched a scene where his penis talks to him. Like many series these days this one is trying to romanticize a dysfunctional relationship. It also portrays Pam as a total bimbo, not saying she's Stephen fry in real life but she doesn't give me any main character energy in this series. Not a total disaster but overall pretty forgettable, and feels pointless so far.

Gold (I) (2022)

Pointless movie

This movie had so much promotion in Australia that I expected something decent. I almost fell asleep midway through. The whole thing felt pointless. We get no backstory to any of the characters, no explanation of this dystopian future (at least I think that's what the movie was set in) and in the end we're left with a predictable lesson about greed. This movie was zac efron trying to prove his acting chops by taking on a gritty roll but there was just not a worthy story.

Eternals (2021)

Marvel style fever dream

The most campy superhero film I've seen in a long time, not in a good way. The main character Cersei was giving me green lantern vibes with her outfit and her acting. Druig was the only "hero" with an interesting and believing internal conflict. If this took place in a world without avengers I'd maybe have been able to get into it a little more.

Yellowstone (2018– )

Going downhill fast

I can't stand these characters anymore. The storylines have all become way too ridiculous to believe take place in modern day Montana. Beth might be the worst, every episode she gives some overly depressing, spiteful monologue. A deep down resentment for Jamie was interesting at first but this full on hate just seems unwarranted. The only decent sibling Kayce might as well have been written off this season.
