Project Power (2020)
Fun twist on the superhero genre
The performances, special effects, and creativity are all great with this one. It's much more than your standard super-dudes trading punches. They really show how dangerous these sorts of abilities can be.
Aside from that, it seems there's alot of real world problems they seem to draw comparisons to. Drugs, government sketchiness, family hardship, natural disaster, and even a bit of PTSD. It seems like alot, but they manage to pull it off without you thinking about it too much.
My only gripe is that they remind you they're in NOLA every 5 minutes. I don't think I've ever seen a movie mention the name of the city so many times, or drop other direct references so often. Nothing against the city (I'm from the area), but it's just weird to do so many times.
The Green Knight (2021)
Weird, unique, and pretty decent
It feels more like The Odyssey than anything. The hero sets out on a journey, where he then discovers this is a world he doesn't totally understand. There's a series of events to help him find out who he is, and perhaps who he wants to be.
It is a bit weird, but it's refreshing to have that in a film sometimes. It can also be a little slow occasionally, but the slower parts are either stunning to look at and/or suspenseful.
I don't know where the horrible reviews are coming from. It's almost like LOTR, Beowulf, and Pan's Labyrinth had a weird baby. If you're a fan of the genre, it's worth a watch.
Black Widow (2021)
Starts bad but gets better
I found the first half hour or so dragging on way too long, but it gets better once all the characters get introduced. Harbour and Pugh were both great additions to MCU, and their performances were the highlight of the film in my opinion.
For me, the biggest flaws of the movie were some of the visual effects. The fire/explosions look really weird, and they often don't even shine light on the environments. They're also way too dark for the scenes, and they always move in slow motion for some reason. Also, some of the green-screening is great, but some of it looks really weird, too.
Aside from some other minor gripes with the story and consistent physics rules, it was enjoyable. The story stands totally apart from the other MCU films, so you don't really have to worry about being confused on the timeline if you haven't seen them.
Without Remorse (2021)
Huh.
I'm confused at how bad this was. Sheridan usually gives us banger after banger, but this was pretty disappointing.
There are one or two cool moments, but so many things don't make sense from any standpoint. Jordan does a great job during the intense parts, but the toned-down bits had me scratching my head trying to figure out if it was bad writing, acting, or both.
My favorite part was when their jet was shot down by an enemy fighter, and they're like, "I'm beginning to think us getting blown up wasn't a coincidence..." Like, what? Okay, Sherlock.
I'm giving it a 4, because the visuals aren't bad, and some of the side characters had consistently good acting chops.
The Foreigner (2017)
Unique and Captivating
The description doesn't do it justice. I thought I was getting myself into another throw-away action flick, but it's much more than that.
The story, characters, and plot are unlike any other film that comes to mind. Jackie kills it in the role of a grieving father. The character motivations are completely unique all around, without too much "Good guy vs bad guy." There's alot of grey, and just enough red ;)
If you want to watch a fresh film that keeps you engaged without trying too hard to throw twists and turns at you, then I highly recommend The Foreigner. I'm still thinking about it days after watching, which isn't something that happens too often.
Sphere (1998)
Underrated
I'm not sure how this one slipped under my radar for so long, but this is a pretty great film. The character building is fantastic and rivals movies like Jurassic Park. Everyone feels real, belongs in the situation, and stays interesting throughout the plot development.
It is slightly more on the horror side than the description would let you believe, but it stays mostly in the vein of a sci fi mystery. Think Event Horizon but with more character focus rather than shock value.
Definitely worth a watch if you're into other films from the 90's.
Skylines (2020)
Wild. (Minor Spoilers)
Two white people have a Latina baby who grows into a sassy adult by age five, joins a band of Starship Troopers wearing bicycle helmets, and shoots laser beams out of her fist to fight aliens.
If you like fake Kung Fu, one-liners, and Syfy VFX from 2010, you're gonna have a decent time.
