Shadowplay (2020)
Shadowplay.
Warning; spoiler alert. I wanted this quality-looking play to work. Interesting cast and all. Just couldn't get attached to the main characters. The protagonists nor the antagonists. I get it that we live in a time of making all people heroes. Even the seriously bad ones. They have a sympathetic back-story. They are somehow 'justified'. But this series pushes that to the extreme. The notion of a good person can be turned if a high ranking perp. Can play life and death on a held loved one, so the good person puts all good people, that they previously barracked for, in deathly jeopardy leaks water. I wonder about the good people of the French resistance. The actual heroism of these people. I wouldn't feel so ripped off in this series, but I have a feeling these weak ones will somehow be lionised too. But I won't find out. My interest has waned. In this case the main protagonist fights the evil outside and the weak inside. A super hero. But can easily be bested by children, a malignant, addicted, weak woman with a dubious gift for the gab, and his invisible brother. A woozy, weak worker on the inside gets turned by a few scratches on his hand. (A very lame torture scene)
No one notices his 'harmed' hand. Suddenly his character changes. He's become a man of action, calling the shots, no less! Huh? A sign sign of poor writing? Lost me. Good try. It did grab my attention early on in the piece though.
Stella Blómkvist (2017)
First 2 minutes of Stella Blómkvist
First off. I am addicted to Nordic, Scandi, whatever, western European crime series. Quality, quality, quality flooding out of there.
S.B.S. where I picked this up, with high hopes, hooked me in.
Now, serious spoiler alert.
So DO NOT READ FUTHER IF INTENDING TO WATCH>
So we have an over-achieving fixer of all things criminal. Top of the game. Sounds good.
Opening scene.
Cunnilingus happening and calls from someone dropping a job in her lap, via the mobile. The caller hears her climax. She pats the recipient male on the head and says 'good boy'.
Lost me at; 'hang on caller I just want to get off'.
What are the writers trying to convey here? Fashionable progressiveness?
I don't particularly give a toss( unintended pun)
As an S.B.S .category of content says..."get a a room".
Whether it's male or female getting their jollies...get a room guys.
Lost me within two minutes.
Not a prude. Like participating in the above. Just time and place. Time and place guys.
Baptiste (2019)
Superb cast. Story dips.
Warning spoiler alert.
An excellent cast.
Great feel to it.
What strong characters have to do to set the course of it let it down.
A seasoned detective leads a heinous, despicable, monstrous sex-slave operation to a young woman hiding out-successfully I might add, right to her door.
He knows the human wastes of space are murderers yet when he embarks on the case he doesn't offer to tell his trusting wife to be careful, she easily gets a microphone planted in her shopping bag, allowing the perps. to be both invisible and everywhere, like magic, neither does he take care himself, having been told of the evil duplicity of his new 'partner' looking for the very same young woman, then gets his car stolen, under his nose, with the address to that terrified woman, on his G.P.S.
Has anyone informed the new writers that we all know, now, hide down a long winding darkened alley, behind skyscrapers, in another city, down country roads etc.etc.etc. if the ditzy detective has his phone with him... ' we can still see you'.
In this case the address was writ large in his car. Convenient for the perp. Two handy things provide free by the star of the show.
So are we to believe he is a crack detective or a total dolt?
And will he be held accountable for the young woman's demise?
I am teetering on the edge of' shall I watch the second half of the 2nd. episode or not?'
I held out hope he was to be a crack case-solver.
Because it is a quality production with a stellar cast.( Loved the said perp.in Taboo) I will give it a second chance. If it goes Inspecter Clouseau on me again I will have to pass.
