The Rainbow (1988)
The Ursula Tornado
At first we don't understand why her mother calls her useless. Then, one choice at a time, her flippant nature reveals itself. (On that note, why did her totally available sister not have prospects?)
I tried to steer Ursula's bad choices throughout the film but she was too conceited, and possibly suffering from mental illness,
trying to wrap her mind around life itself - an intuitive in a sensory world. Trying to live inside a story when she should have probably taken the marriage and travel and became a writer.
I was so angry at Ursula throughout the film, for destroying everything she touched. But without knowing herself, she truly had nothing to give.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
A Film Can be Ruined by a Wig
Keira Knightley was for some reason given a bad wig for this movie that left her with an undercut in the back, no part on top, and stringy strands hanging in her face for most of the film. In the far superior mini series, Lizzie's hair had tendrils in the front and was pinned back (like the other women in the film), which went with the fashion of empire waist nightgown style dresses in light colors. This film got the style of the era very, very wrong and thought the audience was dumb enough not to be distracted by a cheap wig on a young girl who certainly would not have had Wish or Shein to order such a wig from. The series' costuming properly shows a time when women were pious (crosses around their necks), fertile (maternity waistlines on trend), and pure (whites and light colors).
The poor costuming ruined this film for me, along with the miscasting of Keira Knightley who was way too cocky for Lizzie. Lizzie is meant to be cheeky but in a very demure way. All this subtly is lost on Keira Knightley among beautiful, meaningly tableaus.
Bar Bahar (2016)
Raw Glimpse of Islamic Culture
It's amazing what a film can do without Hollywood intervention. In Between is a raw look at Islamic culture through a woman's perspective, as three roommates try to live their own lives and their lovers and families try to crush their spirits. The sexy smoker, the young veiled nun, and the brooding lesbian.
Similar to the film 'Or', this movie has a beautiful realistic pace and mood. Interspersed with good EDM. Scenes are shot in long stage play type shots. The whole world would like a true glimpse at Islamic culture right now, and this is Islam un-hijabed. The surprise is Islam mirroring a more watered down version of the same conflicts in the West.
Final Analysis (1992)
90s Eye Candy
I loved this movie. The 90s, San Francisco, and an old-fashioned plot.
The pacing is good. Kim Basinger is believable as innocent, but doesn't play guilty as well. Richard Gere brings on his own fate. There were a few problems with the ending. See if you can spot them. Also, the post-trial interrogation is porly written. Some of the cinematography was excellent, very tightly woven. Extreme visual drama.
If you want a forgotten 90s lost gem, definitely watch.
Unfollower (2020)
Follow Closely
As someone who has been cyber-stalked, I thought this film was quite realistic.
The soundtrack was appropriate and nuanced, there was good attention to detail in the many online exchanges, and the main character was relatable. I thought the theme was pertinent - when you put yourself online as a public figure, there is a natural human repsonse to be dragged down. There are many scenes you have to rewatch to read the full text, or to see a clue in the background. And this is an undeniably beautifully shot film.
The movie has a stiff Canadian feel to it, but as a Lifetime Movie fan, I personally like this style.
