Twister (1996)
Worth a look, but don't expect to be blown away.
Being a young severe weather enthusiast, I've waited for a while to be able to see a big-budget tornado movie. But TWISTER didn't really meet my expectations. How did the actors manage to look so cool? Most real-life tornadic situations DO NOT leave your hair style untouched. Perhaps they should have looked a little more...wind-swept! Also, would people who are in a situation that dangerous really be bickering over their divorce papers? I wouldn't, I'd be concentrating on NOT getting killed!
Don't get me wrong, this is NOT a terrible movie. It's fine - if you don't know more than the basics of the subject. From a purely dramatic point of view it is a good film and worth a look, but there are probably better tornado movies out there somewhere.
Night of the Twisters (1996)
TV Goes TWISTER...
... And in my humble opinion does a better job of it! Okay, so NIGHT OF THE TWISTERS is a family movie, and it does gloss over the realities a bit. Also, because it's set at night, you don't get to see that much of the tornadoes.
But, for all this, I still like it better than TWISTER. At least the tornadoes in this film are comprised of real footage!
Jurassic Park (1993)
Teeth, claws and a moral message.
This is a terrific movie with an underlying message: things are the way they are for a good reason. I first saw it in the cinema in 1993 and loved every minute. Since then I've tried to watch it every time it's come on TV and have three copies on video (the first two got eaten, velociraptor style, by my partner's VCR). I still love the film's unashamed sense of wonder, personified by several characters including the eccentric John Hammond, and its sense of humour (who, having seen this film, could forget Dr. Malcolm?). Take it from me (and doubtless quite a few others), this film is DEFINITELY worth watching.
Threads (1984)
A great film but not for the faint hearted!
I first saw THREADS a few weeks ago on its 2001 U.K. release. And I can understand why it's been banned for such a long time.
The images presented in the film are stunningly graphic. Potential viewers please take note - they will stay with you for a long time. And it's the little things that really get you. THREADS pulls no punches (with a large team of scientists listed in the credits in an advisory capacity it's hardly surprising) - it just tells it exactly as it could well have been. This film will REALLY make you think. It makes me aware of just how lucky we all are to be alive now, especially as I'm too young to remember most of the Cold War.
But as much as this movie is shocking, it is also brilliant. I would recommend it to anybody and I firmly believe all politicians should be made to view it. All I can say is, if you can see it, then DO SO.
The Bill (1984)
Long live a brilliant cop show!
What a series! This is probably the best long-running drama on T.V., although it has gone downhill since D.S. Boulton was killed. The new C.I.D. cast have a lot to live up to. THE BILL is rarely boring, mostly enlightening and normally with a great sense of humour. It has kept us entertained with a clever mix of crime-fighting and human interest stories. Long may it last!
The Cassandra Crossing (1976)
They don't make 'em like this any more!
I was eleven years old when I first saw THE CASSANDRA CROSSING, and even though at that time I only saw the last five minutes or so (from where the old man sacrifices his life in order to save the train) it stayed with me and kept nagging at me to watch the whole thing. Seven years later I managed to get to see the whole movie, and it was well worth the wait. Don't be put off by the first section of the film, in which the characters and their relationships are established - this is crucial to the understanding to the plot as it develops. Be patient, and you will be well rewarded. If only modern disaster films were more like this one!
