Blown Away (2019)
Contestants & sculptures are amazing, host notsomuch
We found the first season of this show about a year ago, and not expecting much, were really (not gonna do it) amazed with how interesting this show was. Some of the artists do have agendas (feminist, environmental, etc) which honestly made their pieces that much more interesting and most are done with a sense of humor. There's a good range of personalities in both seasons. You have someone talented and cocky that usually becomes the "heel", a feel good story, a funny weirdo with not much experience; your dark horse, I guess. And then of course there's the drama of this incredible piece of art being made of glass, so it can break at any moment, and many do.
The host of this show, however, is absolutely awful. I don't know if he's someone famous' son or what the deal is but he somehow manages to be a bad actor when just being himself and hosting a show. They never introduce him or his credibility so when the other judge and their "guest" judge are making interesting comments, he wanders in and is like, "hey, this one looks like a peanut butter sandwich, amiright???" WTF. I can't believe they brought him back for season 2.
Anyhow, it also suffers from some heavy editing, but it's mostly the awkward judging and hosting, but they were halfway there for this show and it's still worth watching to see some incredibly talented artists.
The Big Family Cooking Showdown (2017)
10 stars for season 1
Season one of this show is fantastic and really easy to get into. Great family dynamics and humor, the hosts are friendly and keep things moving, and it's really about the joy of families cooking together; just what everyone needs in this climate. In season 2 the whole dynamic changed. The hosts seem to mostly be there to make fun of the contestants behind their backs and it's much more geared towards, "drama". There's plenty of American cooking shows for that. I go to the British ones for a more relaxing, wholesome experience. I was really looking forward to season 2, but sadly don't think I'll make it through the first three episodes. Definitely worth watching for the first season though.
