Heckler (2007)
I can't Heckle this one
As a filmmaker myself I know how deep it may hurt to read a negative review. It is true that everyone is a critic these days. It's very easy to sit behind a computer and bash somebody else's work. I also believe that there are a lot of disgruntled critics out there, who could not swing it in the biz themselves, so they take their anger out on other peoples work. I watched this movie at the perfect time. My film STASH came out about a month ago and has seen it's fair share of mixed reviews. Some good and some bad. The thing is that people will actually attack you personally. Geez..if you don't like the movie, tell us what you don't like about it and move on. Jamie Kennedy has experienced this many times, and this is a brilliant movie for him to do. I really enjoyed this film, and highly recommend it to any artist that has or is getting to release their product onto the world. The internet critic can be brutal and this was a very therapeutic watch for me. Thanks you Jamie for putting this out!!!
Zeppo: Sinners from Beyond the Moon! (2007)
Beer drinking zombies...What else do you need?
ZEPPO is one of those movies that takes you back to the days of low budget cinema in the style of Ed Wood, with a little Troma mixed in. You got ghouls, woman, cardboard sets, beer drinking zombies, and many other crazy concepts. Another draw for this indie gem is the casting of three b-movie genre staples. Troma President Llyod Kauman, Debbie Rochon, and Plan 9 From Outer Spaces' Conrad Brooks! There is indeed some side splitting laugh out loud moments in this movie. People who may be offended by raunchy humor probably should avoid this film. If you are a fan of Troma and other movies similar in that style you will find everything you need right here. I must also praise the filmmakers for getting a very good sound mix. The dialog was mostly all recorded separate with ADR sessions and it sounds very nice and crisp, which is the downfall of a lot of no no budget films. Hopefully this film will get a distribution deal soon and get out there for the masses to check out. If you like this film you will also enjoy the Directors other film Purvos.
Roadside Attractions (2004)
One HELL of a ride!
Let's say that this film was the reason that I purchased a Panasonic DVX-100 to shoot my first feature film STASH. I had the pleasure of meeting CJ a few years ago at a film convention in Lexington, KY. He was a really nice dude, and also a very talented one. I remember asking him what kind of film camera he used for the production, and when he said it was DV I about fell over. It was then, and still to this day in my opinion one of the best DV shot movies I have ever scene. Let's not skimp over the storytelling here which is also superb! You could tell CJ put A lot of thought into this project before shooting. The lighting and cinematography were really great and caught the perfect mode at all times. This all leading up to one of the BEST endings I have seen in ANY movie period, mainstream or indie. If you have not seen this one, I think CJ has it over at his website for view. IF not I'm sure it can be found out there somewhere with a search, and I highly recommend it!
Dead Moon Rising (2007)
A Rise To The Ocassion
DMR is very good film for the first feature from Mark Poole. He was also the editor of the film, and you can tell that a lot of effort was put into the film. The camera work was pretty solid throughout and had some really cool shots. The acting was also very solid. My fav having to be Jason Crowe and Tucky Williams. Look out for these two to make a splash in Indie horror! I could see Jason as a cult status actor along the lines of Bruce Campbell when the right role comes around. This movie might gain a strong cult following, and I would not be surprised if it got one. I have watched many Indie films and this is one of the better crafted ones. The blood and gore were pretty descent. I would have like to have seen a little more of it, but there's enough to keep horror hounds watching. The audio for the most part was good, but there was a few scenes where it was pretty muffled, or the gain was turned up too loud in order to try and salvage some poorly recorded dialog. Oh yeah throw some more T n A in there next time! I can't remember seeing a set in this movie. I only watched it one time, so maybe I missed it. All in all a very good indie feature. Can't wait to see more projects from Mark Poole.
Motor Home Massacre (2005)
I would rather be massacred than watch this again!
I can't think of one single thing good to say, other than the Wide Angle shot of the Motor Home in front of the house in the very beginning. This film starts out with a very clumsily shot sequence where a girl gets strung up inside her tent and stabbed. We get some really quick cuts, and the motion of the shot is moved around to make it look more violent than it really was. The blood is very pink! Come on it's not that hard to make real looking blood! Look it up on the net, you'll find it! This movie has the most idiotic clichéd characters I have ever witnessed, and I watch A lot of indie horror. I actually prefer it for the most, but this was pure garbage. The soundtrack was bad beyond words and had some terrible music cues! Not quit as bad as Rob Zombie's Halloween but really bad. The Garage band loops get very old, very fast! There is no continuity! Watch the dork guys outfit change in the beginning! As one reviewer posted a low budget is no reason for obvious mistakes like this one! The day for night shots looked really bad. We go from a really dark lit camp scene to a daytime shot with a little blue tint added to it. Shoot closer to dusk or very early morning! Don't shoot in the middle of the day and expect to pull this trick off! Oh my gosh this is bad! I give Kudos for getting the movie made, and out there, but try a little harder next time people! Wow LionsGate! Mr. Jingles last week, and now this crap! Really bad ending as well. Stay away from this at all costs!
Camp Daze (2005)
Not enough good points to make up for the bad.
I will say that unlike most comments, I liked the look of this movie. The time warp thing should have been used more. After it was introduced, they never really done anything else with it.The gore was pretty lame. Every kill was almost the same. Maybe a little cherry pie filling coming out of the mouth. The score was pretty nice. The composer did a great job with the 80's themed music and the use of strings, which really captured the sound of the 80's slasher. I agree with the other comments with the over use of close ups. It's like they had a camera mounted Mic and were trying to stay in close enough range for the best audio. I think these filmmakers have some talent, I think they just need to concentrate more on good audio, and developing a solid plot.
