Tata muta muntii (2021)
Eye of the beholder
After reading a few reviews, seeing how divisive the father (admirably played by Mr. Titieni) is, I believe this movie perfectly underlines the greyness of life. On one hand you have an extremely powerful man going full Ahab in his quest to literally move the mountains (beautiful Romanian aphorism), alienating his family along the way, on the other hand you have the fearless leader capable of inspiring people and turning doubters into believers.
One of the best shot Romanian movies, one of the very few without sound issues, head and shoulders above the artsy fartsy empty works of some of the better known Romanian directors.
Free Guy (2021)
One of the worst
This has actually managed to make The Tomorrow War look like a great movie. Ryan Reynolds cannot save this wreck, Taika Waititi is surprisingly unfunny, while the female lead has the charisma of a brick wall.
Hannibal Rising (2007)
why is there no "zero points" option?
I love movies! I laugh out loud at comedies, cry at dramas and grip the edge of my seat while watching a thriller. Many times I continued watching a movie even though I thought it was lame, hoping something would turn out to be good in the particular production. I never claimed my money or my time back. But no now! Hannibal Rising oughta be the worst movie ever! It's not even entertainingly bad, it was "bad" bad! I took a look at the other "hated it" reviews before starting mine up... Some said it's the gratuitous violence that turned 'em off, some said the geographical/historical inadvertences, some complained the accents were really bad, some commented on how this film cannot compare to the previous enactments. What p****d me off? Everything! I mean It's really hard to put my finger on what was so bad about this movie that made me interrupt my watching it and start reading reviews and trivia about it. I finished it after a 2 hours break and I felt compelled to write this comment. If you want to see it, wait for the DVD. You'll still lose precious time but you won't regret the money. I warned you!
Man of the Year (2006)
No fun, no thrills... nothing!
The only reason this movie got 3 points in my book is its first half hour. Not-so-bad jokes, interesting plot - I was ready for a great film... But then... Plothole after pothole, bad jokes, poor directing (??!!), VERY poor acting (especially the female lead, didn't bother to get her name)... Robin Williams was no surprise - actually he made the best of this stupid screenplay, Christopher Walken was his usual self while Jeff Goldblum... where was Jeff Goldblum? My guess is that the studio people that OK'd this feature read only the first few pages of the script - as I mentioned a REALLY good half hour or so - and then said: "OK, let's do it!". Towards the end of the movie I almost fell asleep - the producers must've thought about that 'cause, out of the blue, sound effects got really loud in key moments, thus interrupting my nice naps. I wish I could tell you more about this film, but I would have to include spoilers and I know that no one would read a comment containing spoilers while considering whether or not to watch this feature. My advice though is to ignore "Man of the year" - that's what it deserves.
Babel (2006)
Crash Reloaded - The Saddest Film I've Ever Seen
One may find hard to find the words to describe the feelings one gets while watching this movie. I had lived in the USA for 5 years and when I came back home (Romania it is) and was asked what America is like I told everyone: watch this movie, Crash. This is how America looks to me, Now, after watching this film, I guess that, for the first time, I got a glimpse of how the Earth is. I saw people not being able to understand each other while while speaking the same language while simple gestures hold so many meanings. I saw so called 3rd world people being polite and helpful to the one insulting them. And I saw no hope. It's really sad...
Mumford (1999)
Great movie!
Loved the story, loved the characters, everything!
This movie is a great fable on redemption, on getting a second chance, on finding who you are and doin' what you're good at.
I'm surprised Mr. Dean didn't get himself a shot at stardom following his performance.
Mr. Kasdan has done a good job as well, both as a director and as a writer.
In the end it just gives you hope anyone can be fixed should people have the patience to listen to each other and be confident enough to spit their issues out.
Casino Royale (2006)
Good movie!
If you're one of those people in love with Inspector Gadget don't bother - stay home and watch Manga cartoons. If, however, you appreciate tongue-in-the-cheek humor, robust action and beautiful scenery, then watch this film - it's the only 007 movie that makes me wait for a sequel. I mean, come on - the Maseratti Daniel Craigs drives must be the first Bond mobile that capsizes (it might as well be just bad driving, lol). As you can probably tell, I'm not a James Bond fan... I found previous enactments to be too artificial and cartoonish. Well, that gives me even more credibility, as I am not biased in my opinion - Casino Royale is just a good movie. Period.
Filantropica (2002)
Is this 'bout being "proud"?
This post is intended as a reply to all my fellow Romanians who felt the urge to patriotically vote this movie as the best they've seen.
This morning I was shocked to find Filantropica to be the 12th best movie ever voted in IMDb's comedy section. After reading the posts though (and, more important, their sources), I have come to realize that it's not the billions of moviegoers that fell in love with this (really) outdated film, but a handful of over-zealous Romanians who just felt this movie (and I will agree with them - it's one of our collapsed "movie industry"'s bests) should make it to the top just because we SHOULD have a notable presence in these ranks. I mean, come on! This website is not about being Romanian, or American, or Australian - this is the best resource for finding out if a movie's good or bad! This is how we, Romanians, lose all credibility - we're soooo biased that next time no one is gonna take our word for granted.
The movie? Filantropica is OK, really. It's got its share of clichés, some of which might not be too noticeable for a person not knowing a lot about Romania, but it's enjoyable enough. The characters are quite crude, often lacking dimension, but remember, this is a satire. I didn't see a dubbed or subtitled version of the movie, so I cannot tell you how much is "lost in translation".
To sum it up: yes, this is one of the best Romanian movies, but this should not be enough to propel it into Top 250. See it for yourselves and decide. If you have problems finding it, just PM me - I'll be happy to help you out!
Toni.
