Sexy Beast (2024)
Check individual episode scores for the show's true rating
Thank god for Eliza Bennett 🙏 Without her on the cast list I never would have watched it, based on the poor rating. So glad I gave it a chance though. The setting is really cool, the story isn't convoluted, the acting is excellent and it's really, really visually appealing. 0 complaints. It's not even worth trying to figure out why this has as low a score as it does. I was trying to find some obnoxiously obvious clichés, bad acting, bad scripting, ANYTHING and I just couldn't. And hour long episodes too. How can anyone complain??
It doesn't move too slowly, it's funny in the right parts and the characters are realistic. Hmph. I can't understand the score at all.
Upon reflection, I imagine the bad score is to do with fans of the movie that believe this is just an attempt at rehashing old movies and converting them into tv shows. I don't think there's anything wrong with that when it's done right, and in this circumstance it absolutely has been. I truly can't recommend this series enough. I actually feel what the characters are feeling.
Goats (2012)
Something different
It's weird and it's funny. It's obviously not meant to keep you on your toes, and a film doesn't have to do that for it to be good. I think people can be too focused on developing plots and a climax and all that, but there's no need. Goats is honestly a good movie and has a great cast.
Tau (2018)
Enjoyable, don't be put off by the low-ish score
Gwen Stefani and Nicholas Hoult did a good job. The movie is pleasing visually and kept me engaged, which I find is rare. Movies about technology tend to have some cliché language and while Tau doesn't completely avoid this, it's definitely not the worst for it.
Definitely lowered the score slightly for the Wilhelm scream. Totally ruined the immersive experience for a moment.
Detroit: Become Human (2018)
The good reviews are blinded by the impressive branching narrative
5 stars exclusively for the complexity of the narrative, which, when you really think of it, is actually understandably achievable by a massive team of people that deliberately abandoned key parts of what many people would consider actually make a game. The controls make 0 sense, forcing you to (on PC) click random buttons at any time to interact with the world. It's also extremely tone deaf, comparing the struggles of androids to real life racism. For example, androids are made to stand at the back of the bus, there is an opportunity to use a raised fist as a symbol of power, and there's the option to say "WE HAVE A DREAM". Not to mention the countless comparisons to slavery. The androids-rise-up narrative is always thrilling one, but this was pathetic and a complete mockery of real events.
The ending is unsatisfying and ends abruptly if you make any mistakes along the way. It feels as though there's one thorough, thought-out finale and everything else they wrapped up quickly just to create the illusion of player choice.
I have truly never felt so compelled to write a review about anything in my entire life. If I could get revenge for the time I wasted on this game, believe me: I would.
