Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
An Unfortunate Misfire
Honestly I wasn't sure I was going to review this movie but since I have a lot to say I thought might as well.
Firstly I want to give my praise for the amazing practical effects from Jim Henson's creature shop. They really do look incredible, and it's awesome to see the animatronics moving around.
Secondly I want to praise the direction, Emma Tammi seems like she knows what she is doing, the movie has a distinct look which I enjoyed.
And lastly for praise I want to say Josh Hutcherson really gives it his all, he really carried what otherwise might have been a really boring protagonist. I actually really like what they did with his character. I really enjoyed the dream theory thing, and actually found it very interesting.
Now to the negatives:
Firstly the script itself, it's a mess. I feel like there was definitely a better script a few rewrites away, but alas this is what they went with. There are way too many plot points, and the movie feels unsure of what it wants to be. More time should have been spent fleshing out characters such as Afton, Abby and Vanessa. Characters like the aunt and her thugs could have been completely removed from the movie, their screentime could have been used on the other more important characters.
Speaking of Vanessa, boy is she a badly written character, if you can even call her that. She exists to drop information. More time needed to be used on her to explain who she is. She also acts very inconsistently with one moment being happy and then in the next threatening to shoot someone.
Next up is William Afton, such a waste of Matthew Lillard. He barely has a presence in the movie despite being the main antagonist. He needed more screentime so his entrance in the final confrontation isn't so random. In turn fleshing him out could also help give us more of Vanessa's backstory. Perhaps we could see her childhood and how William's treatment shaped her.
Next up is the lack of horror. The movie isn't scary, and when I say that I mean like at all. I remember in one of the promotional videos Lillard said this would be full of jumpscares, yet I can only recall one. And it didn't even land since you saw it coming a mile a way. Also the lack of a creepy atmosphere really brings the movie down. The animatronics aren't allowed to act creepy, and most of their screentime is either spent in the middle of the film befriending Abby. I was also disappointed we didn't see a single scene of Mike just trying to survive the night like in the games.
The final confrontation is rushed. Afton literally just appears out nowhere to taunt Mike. And then gets swiftly killed after Abby replaces a drawing of him with the kids with one where he is killing them.
Honestly I hope they work to make the script more tight if a sequel is made, overall I don't hate this movie. And I actually quite enjoyed it despite all my problems with it. I'd give this movie a 6.5/10.
Blue Beetle (2023)
Very genuine movie about family.
Honestly wasn't planning on reviewing this one despite liking it, but after seeing so many negative and quite unfairly critical ones I felt the need to get my own opinion on here.
I'll start by giving a brief plot synopsis.
The movie centers around Jaime Reyes, a recent collage graduate coming back to his home in Palmera City only to discover that things aren't the same as when he left. Things aren't going well for his family so he vows to get his family out of their situation. He manages to get a job offer from Jenny Kord but when he comes to meet her she instead giver her the Scarab, an ancient piece of alien technology. Jaime is tasked with protecting it but the thing instead bonds to his spine and transforms him into the superhero, Blue Beetle.
Let's start with the positives:
- The Cast, this is the films strongest element. All the characters are extremely likable and the Reyes family dynamic is the highlight of the film. Everyone gives out a great performance, Xolo Maridueña is an excellent leading man, and he really feels like Jaime Reyes and is perfect casting. George Lopez is also excellent, and very funny as Jaime's paranoid uncle Rudy. Bruna Marquezine plays Jenny Kord, Jaime's love interest, and a hero in her own right. The final actor I want to talk about is Damián Alcázar who plays Jaime's father, he is excellent in the role and gives of a very emotional performance.
- The visual effects, This is the best looking superhero movie this year in terms of effects. I believe the reason for this is that a lot of the movie is practical so the few visual effects that are, have all the effort put into them to make them look as clean as possible. Honestly was very surprising to me how good the cg looked considering the budget of the film being way smaller than other superhero films.
- The soundtrack, it's excellent and that seems to be a trend with DC films. The synth really gives the soundtrack of this movie a unique feel compared to other superhero films.
The bad:
- Unfortunately the villains of this film are on the generic side. Susan Sarandon plays Victoria Kord, an evil business woman who plans to create an advanced set of military gear (OMAC from the comics). Raoul Trujillo plays Carapax, who actually has an interesting backstory but he isn't given much time in the movie. Honestly I think he should probably have been the main villain instead of Victoria.
Overall the film is solid and I recommend seeing it, I'd give it an 8.5.
The Flash (2023)
A DC fan's dream!
I say this as fan, this movie is a love letter to us. Andy Muschietti knows what he is doing.
The movie is technically an adaption of Flashpoint but the DC film equivalent with lots of callbacks to not just the DCEU but the entire history of DC on film! Also the movie finally makes it clear which JL is canon, it's ZSJL!
The cast are all phenomenal, Ezra Miller despite their allegations carries this film and delivers a career best performance that is not only engaging but also emotional. Michael Keaton is as great as ever here and arguably even better than in the original Burton films. Sasha Calle's role is small but she is good in the role and I can see her playing the character in future if given the chance.
Overall as a DC and a Flash fan the movie really satisfied me!
I recommend seeing it on the biggest screen possible!
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Not good.
This is the beginning to Marvel's phase 4 and it's a weak start.
Let's start with the plot, it's weak and is literally caused by the main characters being dumb.
The Cg looks terrible in most of the movie but can't really blame em since Marvel don't give the Vfx companies any time anymore.
The only saving grace of this movie is Kang, Jonathan Majors sells every scene and is carrying this movie on his back.
In the end this movie is no more than setup for something bigger and forgets to have a good story, if this is the direction of the next Avengers then we are in for a bad time.
I don't recommend seeing this in the theaters, wait for streaming.
Peacemaker (2022)
Gunn brings out the best of DC content in Peacmaker!
What can I say? Gunn did it again, he managed to make what might just be the best Superhero show out right now and it's about a character not many people know about.
The show blends an engaging story with a colorful cast of characters, all with their own unique quirks, standouts so far being Daniella brooks character Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma's Vigilante and of course the star of the show John Cena's Peacemaker! Along with them the other characters offer much to look forward to and many characters have backstories to look forward to seeing more on.
Anyhow I recommend giving the show a watch! 10/10 for me!
The Lion King (2019)
A soulless animated cashgrab
In 2019 Disney released what I believe is their worst remake so far, The Lion King.
Why is this movie so bad you may ask?
Well the the movie suffers from being a shot for shot remake of the original but with new voice acting and visuals that pale in comparison with the original, it's baffling that they chose to go the direction of realistic animals when they lack any sort of emotions or facial expression, now yes real animals can't express emotion the same way 2d animated animals can but the movie is animated anyway so why not make them more expressive? In the original you could always tell how the characters felt even when not talking, here they are just planks with voices coming out of them.
Now let's get to the part which still baffles me, the movie is 99,9% animated with only 1 real shot which isn't hard to find or even good. Why they chose to make the film in unity which is a game engine will always remain one of the most baffling choises in filmmaking, I guess the director just had too much fun playing around in VR enviroment instead of actually adding any sort of flair to the film.
1/10.
Jurassic Fight Club (2008)
Fights over Facts.
This show is infamous among the paleontology communities for it's inaccurate depictions of these animals and ridiculous fight scenarios.
If you are looking for cheap entertainment to watch ironically then maybe this will please you but other than that stay away, don't watch this show to get educated.
But if nothing else this show did give us the meme of Dinosaur George saying: " Tyrannosaurus Freaking Rex!"
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Ruins Toy story 3's ending
As someone who grew up with these films it saddens me to see how they screwed this up.
Basically everything comes down to the plot which is that Bonnie replaces Woody with a damn fork and ultimately forgets about him?!
And how does this ruin the third films ending you may ask?
Well it comes down to the fact that Andy hesitantly gives away his toys even more so Woody and he only gives him away when Bonnie promises to take care of them.
Well does she?
NO.
SHE DOESN'T EVEN NOTICE WOODY IS MISSING THROUGH THE ENTIRE MOVIE.
Honestly what a joke.
Only watch if you are high or want to ruin your childhood.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
It leaves you asking for more!
Zack Snyder delivers by far his best film with Justice League. The film has an engaging story with a lot of heart and a great cast of characters who all have good chemistry together standouts being Ezra Millers Flash and Ray Fishers Cyborg. The film also has many easter eggs and cameos fans of the comics will recognize.
Honestly as a big fan of DC this is my favorite DCEU film.
