9-1-1: Lone Star (2020)
So badly written !
I am a fan of 9-1-1 and have been watching this since the start. The first series was ok if you ignore all the virtue signalling box ticking for the characters.
But this season is just so poorly written ! 9-1-1 is known for having some big disasters, but they keep them reasonably realistic / believable - for example an earthquake in California that leads to a tidal wave.
But this weeks episode of 9-1-1 Lone Star had a volcano in Austin ! Now if they had kept the script reasonable - you might be able to handle that. However they decided to use that to make a pool boil - then the boiling pool basically had flying lava rocks coming out of it ! One of which hit a guy in the heart - another killed one of their team ! Seriously do the writers do any research at all ? All the larva fissures were erupting like mini volcanoes ! Then added to the cheesy plot - you had the cheesy script! It was as though children wrote the episode !
Geez i have no idea why they keep such sub par programmes on TV, yet cancel decent ones. Maybe it has something to do with the tick boxing !
The Watch (2020)
Not Perfect but a Great Show
So i would imaging die hard Discworld fans would find an issue with this show - much in the way that die hard Trekkies and Star Wars fans, do with re-adaptions of those series. However if you watch this with no or little knowledge of Discworld, you ca enjoy it for what it is, a good show.
I like how it is based on Discworld, but is not discworld as such. The characters work well together, although i can't get over the fact that the female coroner looks so much like Adam Ant ! I like how you have so much going on in the background of each shot, and how the goblins have their own side bar relating to unionising etc.
I also like the storyline, but i can see it getting a bit tedious quite quickly if the writers aren't careful.
For now it is a good series, not great, not perfect, but better than a lot of what is available at the moment.
The Rookie (2018)
I used to love this show - not anymore
Rookie was one of my favourite shows. I loved how it was well written and light-hearted. It focussed on the characters within the series and how they developed and cops and how they handled the odd situations they came across.
Season 3 however is a disaster. Every story, every sentence, has an agenda. It is heavily biased and it detracts from the well loved characters and their personalities. The agenda isn't even factual. For example :
- a black woman is pulled over for running a red light. She is found to have a stash of guns in the car. She claims they belong to her ex and gives a sob story about how she was confiscating them and delivering them to the police station. She admits stealing her husbands property and breaking into his house with a key to do so. She gets arrested by the evil white guy cop while Jackson looks on in anger. He claims she should have never been arrested. So the writers here want the police to believe every story they are told without question and want the police to ignore obvious felonies ! Instead they want them to have sympathy !
-another one, Lucy berates Tim for being too harsh on a group of Latino gardeners that they pulled over when she had first started patrolling with him. She claims he was to harsh on them and that he should have considered how hey felt even though they had several violations against them. So again the writers want the police to consider the feelings of criminals and potential criminals. The writers actually want the police to stop and think about this before they make a move ! Have the writers ever actually been involved with real police work ?
I wouldn't mind if the subject was touched upon, or they made series 3 involve a long running incident about a single act of police brutality. For example i think it would have been good if they had a felon die in their custody suite, then involve the fall out in subsequent episodes - for example show how the rookies deal with a riot against their station etc. But no - instead it is lots of heavily one sided sub plots that do nothing more than show the ignorance of the writers and their determination to tick boxes !
It just detracts from what was a good show and it is a shame.
All Creatures Great & Small (2020)
A Very Enjoyable Series - hope the Christmas Special is not a sign of things to come
The beauty of this series is the fact that it doesn't pander to today's PC / Woke demands - it just gets on with being a good series about a cuple of vets up in the Dales.
However the first thing you notice on the Christmas Special is the tokenism to appease the critics. This comes in the form of two characters that were never seen in the series - one being a black woman. Since the characters are new and this little snippet was put it right at the start - you know straight away it is just an empty gesture to appease some people. It adds nothing to the story.
I just hope that it isn't a sign of things to come - where the writers and producers spend more time worrying about who they have to include and who they may offend, rather than focussing on the script and story.
This little special was good but it did feel a little rushed in places.
El Cid (2020)
A very good watch !
Firstly i find it funny that the latest reviewer - random 70778 - is critical of a historian who enjoyed the show. This reviewer makes out they know the historical inaccuracies in El Cid - while claiming that the Vikings never raided Spain in the 11th Century, when in fact Viking raids were a common occurrence in the 11th Century due to Spain being en route to Jerusalem - a route taken often by Olaf II of Norway. As for the Panteon - it was completed by Sancha after she was widowed - so it isn't as far off as this reviewer claims.
As for the program - it is good. It is more accurate, historically, than most historic dramas. It is well acted and keeps you interested throughout. It is not perfect but it is a far better offering than a lot produced lately. It reminds me of the quality and production values of Romulus.
