Mr. 3000 (2004)
8/10
very enjoyable
11 May 2009
Mr.3000 stars the lovable Bernie Mac who proves here that he could carry a film as the leading man. It is a real shame we wont get to see any more of him. The movie shows us the development of his character and, despite his often obnoxious behaviour, i really engaged with character.

Angela Basset is a delight as always and the film doesn't just fall completely in line with sports movie clichés. That is confirmed with the ending, which i wont spoil, but was a real surprise.

I don't think it will shock that the movie ends happily and him and Basset end up together, but that's what we want to happen.

Give this garbage a wide berth

Warning: Spoilers
This is without a doubt one of the worst movies of 2008. The movie suffers from the lack of chemistry between Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. It's the core of the movie and we never believe in them as a couple. We drift through the movie from one embarrassingly unfunny scene to another including a sequence where Vaughn's brothers, who are Ultimate Fighters attack him, an attempt to put up a satellite dish where everyone and everything falls over. More pitiful scenes follow. A reenactment of the nativity scene is presumably added to pad this garbage out and just when you think things can't get worse....they do! The final 10 minutes goes for soppy sentimaentality with the couple's 'relationship' which is totally out of keeping with this surprisingly mean spirited 'comedy'. It doesn't matter since we never believed in them as a pair to begin with. This train wreck is ended when a baby, for the second time, projectile vomits over Reese Witherspoon. An unbelievably awful film.

Big Trouble (2002)

very funny

An all star cast really deliver in this gem of a screwball comedy. The story is completely ridiculous, but you don't watch movies like this for the plot. You watch them for a few laughs and this one delivers more than a few. Janeane Garafolo, always hilarious, is on top form and her pairing as a cop with Patrick Warburton provides plenty of chuckles.

The only quibble i had with the movie was that Rene Russo, an actress i really like, is underused, but Tim Allen, who i often find a little irritating, is more restrained in his role and very watchable.

So just switch your brain off for 75 minutes or so and enjoy plenty of silly laughs!

The Big White (2005)
9/10
a little gem

Warning: Spoilers
For me this was one of the best movies of 2005. Robin Williams is an actor i like, but is often guilty of going totally over the top. He doesn't do that here and i really engaged with his character. The plot is fun, although obviously there are holes all over the place, and all the characters are a delight to watch. Holly Hunter provides a lot of laughs, but i don't think they overdo the jokes involving her, which they could easily have done.

A happy ending for all in a movie that comes across as a mix of 'Fargo' and 'A Simple Plan'. That is a great compliment, since those are two excellent movies.
