The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Guarnteed to be an award winning show!
This TV Mini-series is excellent! It is wonderful to see Anya Taylor-Joy in a well crafted show. She shines brilliantly as Beth Harmon a chess playing prodigy. The story takes us from when she is a small girl, orphaned, continuing through her teenage angst years. I highly recommend this show. Great cinematography and directing and of course to get back to the acting - its top notch! I only wish there was more than 7 episodes.
Lost Angelas (2019)
A stylish low-budget indie in search of one's soul that glows
" Lost Angelas" is a low-budget indie which rotates from being sweet, innocent, romantic, sexy, sadistic and terrifying. This is a stylish, millennial indie that expands from the norms accepted in previous movies. With that being said, this is not a movie for big budget action fans. Don't expect to see a hundred million dollar action movie or you will be disappointed.
However, the performances are gripping and the chemistry between the actors are undeniably strong. The soul-searching story kept me hooked for the ninety minutes. Meanwhile my brother found the complex premise floating past him and right over his head.
I expect this indie to have this type of reception, as polarizing as the film's gutsy ending.
I recommend this movie, especially if you are interested in indie films and art house movies. Interesting note - the trailer showed this movie won an award in a category that was given to movies made for less than a hundred thousand dollars.
Utopia (2020)
Interesting for the comic book fan
Such an interesting premise and take on the pandemic taking over the world. The UK version previously made has high ratings. Haven't seen this original version yet, however I am excited to see the difference.
The characters in this version are interesting with shocking revelations. John Cusack doesn't disappoint as revolutionary scientist.
The first season delivers an ending that keeps our interest for the second season. The main characters keep the interest of the viewers and the actors' chemistry is strong.
Bellflower (2011)
A micro-budget fast ride from visionary Evan Godell
After submitting to all the big festivals and getting rejected to each one, "Bellflower" director Evan Godell was planning on shelving the film. This would have been a shame as "Bellflower" delivers on what true Independent Films have been missing. The producer of the movie decided to submit to a new category formed at Sundance Film Festival called NEXT, for micro-budget movies. The movie was accepted and Godell's trajectory has never been the same, as "Bellflower" was picked up for distribution and entered theaters across the U.S.
I for one await this visionary's next movie.
Enola Holmes (2020)
Enola Holmes delivers
A fun story with a new take on a member of the Holmes family. "Enola Homes" is very watchable for the whole family. The mystery of Enola's mother's disappearance is the main focus of the story. In the process Enola meets a friend who has also been missing. She goes on her own adventure and discovers who she will become. Millie Bobby Brown is excellent as Enola and Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham Carter as usual deliver great performances.
Wild at Heart (1990)
Wild Ride on the Raunchy Side
References to Elvis and "The Wizard of Oz" pop up in this wild and raunchy ride that delves into the subconscious, genius of David Lynch. Nic Cage is extraordinary as a character who is as endearing as he is is volatile. He stars with Laura Dern who shares the screen with her real life mother, Diane Ladd. Both give memorable performances, if not career defining.
Willem Dafoe delivers the most riveting performance as Bobby Peru. A character we loathe. Yet we can't help but love Dafoe's daring portrayal.
Lynch takes chances through out the movie and it pays off. One of my favorite movies that was panned by Siskel and Ebert but won the Palme d'Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. Lynch raises his own bar from his previous work such as "Blue Velvet."
