Mystery and Imagination: Lost Hearts (1966)
The scariest thing I've ever seen.....
I was 9 years old when this was shown, back in March 1966.
I never got scared about programmes on TV; but this changed all that. The build up was scary enough but that final scene....well, I can still picture it vividly today. The heart burning on the fire whilst the shredded curtains billowed against the open windows. I watched it through my fingers which were pressed against my face but, of course, I HAD to watch!
A follow up was done by the BBC in the early 70's which is on YouTube and is good enough but regrettably not in the same league as this one. Unfortunately this version no longer exists; so much stuff was wiped back in those days as soon as it had been broadcast so the tapes could be re-used. What sacrilege!
Partners in Crime (2015)
Oh dear!
I have always loved period murder/mystery series....such a change from similar shows set in the present day where it seems to be full of computer gadgets, people shouting at each other to little effect and, of course, blood and gore. So when I heard about this what could go wrong?
Unfortunately, plenty.
I'm not sure whether the stories are meant to be serious or light hearted. The acting is so wooden, particularly and surprisingly David Walliams, that you almost get splinters from watching it. The whole thing is like Agatha Christie meets Billy Bunter and the Famous Five....you expect someone to trot out something like "what- oh, old bean" or suggest a binge at the school tuck shop. And I suppose the biggest mystery of all is how it got to the screen in the first place. But then, if you are someone like Walliams and go to the Beeb with an idea....
Probably only worthy of a 2, really. But I'll give it one more star for the comedy value....
The Interceptor (2015)
Very enjoyable!
Well, we recorded this as we would otherwise have missed the first two episodes. And then, seeing the poor reviews it had, I thought about deleting it....
One evening last week we decided to watch episode 1. Seven nights of one-episode-a-night later we've finished it and all I can say is I am so glad I didn't press the delete button.
So what if it's a rip-off of an older programme? There's scarcely a decent show these days which isn't. At least it's one where I feel I don't need a Mensa-type IQ to understand the convoluted plot....and it's British. And above all it is very well acted particularly in respect of the two main characters....Ash and Roach....which is as it should be. Trevor Eve in particular is superbly cast as the villain.
As I say....very enjoyable!
