Drive-Away Dolls (2024)
Love it! When queer women meet the Coen brothers!
Watched it with my girlfriend on a lazy weekend. Had so much fun with this!!! We need more lesbian roadtrip buddy comedies!! It is unapologetically queer and quirky indeed. Happy to see queer women being represented more on screen. I hope people won't be discouraged by the rating and haters.
Very simple plot and concept. Campy, trippy, and over the top. Great casting too as Jamie and Marianne look great together.
Always loved the Coen brothers and was not disappointed at all by Drive-Away Dolls at all. This movie is quite different from their previous works. Would recommend if you want a light watch and a good laugh.
Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power (2022)
Are you offended?
It's interesting to see the different opinions from the comment sections. I saw someone made a comment and it goes something like "yes women are being objectified but they are also doing so on their own accord..."and they (sorry to assume but i guess there is 89% chances that they are a cis-gender heterosexual man) used examples if instagram influencer and models...
Utterly speechless, why so defensive? This is a desperate try to distract people and themselves from the actual issues at the core of this film which is extremely poignant. If we are talking about male gaze, and the objectification of men toward women, we are talking about an oppressive troupe which put women in a passive position, dehumanizing women, ignoring their subjectivity and voices while fragmenting their bodies, privileging the male gaze. Influencers and models are a different issue here, what they suggest that is women dont have autonomy and sense to empower themselves by displaying and posing their bodies on sns in their own way. Cuz whatever we do is to cater your gaze and perpetuate male oppression right?
Women have the freedom to choose whatever the way the want to celebrate and display their bodies, its about being comfortable in one's own skin.
And also why not think of why women feel the need sometimes to cater or as they suggest perpetuate the objectification? Its patriarchal pedagogy and propaganda which a lot of us have to unlearn. Its structural, still pinpointing to the cultural of female objectification. Stop being defensive, look inward. Or else you are not getting any point of this documentary.
Minamata (2020)
Yes Eugene is important, so is Aileen Mioko.
I would recommend anyone who is interested or have already watched this film to read this article by Kyoto Journal.
The article is titled:
Documenting Minamata with W. Eugene Smith:
An Interview with Kyoto Activist Aileen Mioko Smith
Aside from the portrayal of Minamata disease, I think the film could have given some more space &thoughts to the character of Aileen. She is an incredible woman whom i truly admire and respect, i hope her role in the Minamata story will not be forgotten and completely overshadowed by that of Gene. Indeed, Johnny Depp is the big star here and Gene is the legendary photographer that deserves attention and recognition. However, it is easy for women to be outshined by their male counterparts in many narratives and discourses. I dont even need to explain why and how is that here.
Anyway, all i try to say is.
Don't ever forget people in Minamata, people who are suffering from social injustice all over the world, Aileen Mioko and Eugene.
Gou shi san (2013)
I knew it, the director is a man
Could've been better.
I thought the movie is going somewhere but it just ends up quite flat.
I was really into the movie until the scene cut to the girl showering in the tub with the nude back...think about it okay the girl they are portraying is a teenager. She's a child supposedly I don't see the point of showing a young girl's nude back out of nowhere. The camera lingered for quite a while and it creeped me out. I feel the gaze from a man who thinks he knows better about life of a young woman dealing with sexism and abuse.
Sorry for the rant but I just don't see the point and quite frankly that shot is predatory.
Patay na si Hesus (2016)
Well made def worth a watch
A family road trip full of surprises...Good times bad times, it wonderful that your loved ones will be there.
I enjoyed the film from the beginning to the end!
It's a shame that I can't rate it 7.5 cuz of IMDb's rating system...I also found it surprising that there aren't much review here, don't let this fool you it's a great film.
Humor is great everything comes natural, plot is smart and ingenious. Gags are right on point too. Actors are amazing. If you are looking for a heartfelt family comedy then this is the right choice. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is interested in indie comedy from the Philippines!
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Bedazzling!! Bravo! One of the greatest!
Why I can't comment in Chinese here????
Chotto tired of translating bruh
Anyways, love it. From the plot to the choreo&mise en scenes and music numbers. The portrayal of the character is quite wholesome if you think about it. There ain't no toxic masculinity and Don is such a charming character. Debbie Reynolds's character is quite androgynous, she's amazing!!!! Donald O'Conor is brilliant and his performance is one in a million.
Chung Kuo - Cina (1972)
It's realistic and detailed.
I like how there is no almost sign of footage of the public dissemination of communism/patriotism but you can see the shadow/omnipresent power of Mao and communist propaganda being represented through the everyday lives of ordinary people. Eg. The apron of the worker that says "Follow Our great chairman Mao's order" & "Unite ! Fight for revolution."
People don't seem to be too startled by the presence of the camera and film crews. But you can see how people are very self-conscious of being taped/observed by camera. When they cast their balance back at the camera, the audiences feel being looked at too. It's not just simply voyeurism.
Reminds me of Bazin and his theory regarding the objectivity of the camera, and ontology of photographic image. Things that we take for granted are actually magical. Moments of lives of the people in the documentary were captured, frozen, and being protected from the passage of time.
tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
I love it
Directed by LMM. Great casts, great songs, great intertextual messages. Garfield plays such a great Larson here, I mean man acted his ass off!!!!
Many familiar faces on screen. Theatre kids will have an absolute blast.
I hope this movie can introduce Larson and his beliefs and work to more people. And get more people to care about everything the show represents and beyond.
Cant count how many I cried during the show.
Thank you world for giving us Jonathan Larson. Thank you legends like Sondheim and Hal Prince for inspiring more genius and amazing artists.
Viva la Vie Boheme.
No day but today. Love is love.
