Hausu (1977)
What arthouse horror should be.
"Hausu" is a true work of art. Amazing shots, great soundtrack, good comedy to lighten it up a bit. The actresses not being actual actresses add a bit more comedic element to it but I feel it adds charm. This movie is all over the place. It's amazing.
From the first act all the way up to the first death it just feels like a fun little comedy/soap. Then onwards you won't want to look away for a second. It all descends into madness and blood. Well worth the watch.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
An ok - albeit flawed - love letter to slashers.
You want gore? You got it. You want forced chemistry? Yeah, you got it. You want a really weird and confusing story? You got it.
This movie may deliver on the gore but lacks in the biggest, most important area: writing. It's a confusing supernatural take on slashers with a good few redeeming qualities. It's pretty slow up until the third act. I would have loved if they went ahead and expanded on the other murderers as well instead of just these three. But we'll just have to see where this goes.
Maniac (1980)
Gritty, sodden, gory slow burn.
This movie has taught me not to trust meta score as much. It's amazing. It's claustrophobic, gory as hell, all leading up slowly to the ending that will mess you up. Give it a shot of you like slashers. You'll love it.
Hospital Massacre (1981)
A hospital you'll never check out of
What. A. Ride.
From the moment it begins, this movie is insane. A kid is hung, each kill has HEAVY bloodshed, all the doctors act evil. It's insane! Probably one of the best B-Movie slashers I've seen. Yes, the killer is completely predictable. But good god if the way they reveal it isn't terrifying, I don't know what is!
And honestly, I'm surprised this movie doesn't have a comedy tag as well because some of the humor is damn funny! She's in an elevator at the beginning with this one guy, and he has "blood" on him and she freaks out but it's just a hamburger. True horror fakeout comedy.
When it takes a dark turn nearing the middle, it takes that turn as sharp as possible. Goes from regular hospital to horrific, abandoned hospital.
Definitely check this one out if you like slashers.
Puppet Master 4 (1993)
You're starting to lose me, Charles Band.
Slipping... slipping... slowly these Puppet Master movies get worse and worse. Puppet Master IV is probably the slowest, most boring one yet. Goofy as hell and nothing to really makeup for it. Why did it have to be this way?
Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge (1991)
Puppet Master starts to get weird
Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge. Quite odd. Makes a confusing backstory a little more confusing to me. Now there's a puppet, Sixshooter, that isn't mentioned in I or II and a tiny backstory for Blade? In all honesty, I thought Blade was just a reincarnation of Toulon from his Faust puppet. But I suppose I was wrong. Some pretty wacky kills and tension that doesn't last long. But it's a fine prequel.
Puppet Master II (1990)
Not as good as the first but still ok
Stop two on my Puppet Master journey! And what a weird one indeed. Odd acting, awkward direction, out of place sexual tension, all wrapped up with a few of kills. One thing that bugged me was all this science/technology talk, it was obvious they knew nothing about science and just decided to throw a bunch of words together.
Not as gory as the first and definitely slower than the first. But it's ok.
Puppet Master (1989)
A solid horror movie
Well, I caved and watched Puppet Master. And holy cow this was one strong movie! Great kills, great stop motion, however mediocre acting. A strong start for the Puppet Master franchise. But being completely honest, I find Tourist Trap to be Schmoeller's strongest. But this one still has its charm and is strong.
Tourist Trap (1979)
Good PG(13) Horror
At the time, this movie got a PG rating (since PG-13 didn't exist until Gremlins) and despite the PG rating, this movie is horrifying. A good fair amount of blood and horrifying moments. A wonderful little gem.
Intruder (1989)
Terrific, Gorific, Horrific.
Holy cow. What a movie. Honestly I was kinda skeptical at first because I've watched so many cheesy, boring slasher films this year. But wow, this movie was incredible! Great chemistry and character development in the first half and then it takes a dark, dark twist in the second half with oh so bloody kills and ambience that will make you never want to go into a store alone again.
One of the best slasher films I have seen yet.
The Amusement Park (1975)
Horrifying symphony of symbolism and mistreatment.
When I first heard this was being released I was excited and the more i heard about it, the more excited I got. And let me say this, it truly lived up to my expectations. It's depressing how something that came out all the way back in 1973 is still relevant. How we mistreat elderly and are so cut to the point with them and not giving them time to think or give them equal opportunities.
The symbolism, from the white suit he wears getting dirtier to elderly people selling of clocks, will burn into your memory. The visuals progressively get more and more distressing.
It truly is the scariest thing Romero has ever directed. Maybe even one of his greatest films.
American Guinea Pig: Bouquet of Guts and Gore (2014)
It's ok
Doesn't hold a candle to the original guinea pig series. A lot of the dialogue about "i'm out of film! Out of roll! Cut!" was kinda cringy. And a lot of the gore was over the top.
The scene that truly got me was the jaw scene. I don't know if it was the quality since they used the VHS camera or what but it got to me. I will be haunted by that.
Speaking of, the 70s roll camera doesn't really help. I see what they were going for, that kinda august underground or last house on dead end street feel but it just made me go "what's happening??"
It's an ok love letter to the original and I hope to see more honestly.
American Guinea Pig: The Song of Solomon (2017)
Had potential but fell short
I'm a huge fan of Guinea Pig so i've decided to start watching American Guinea Pig as well. And... this one is... something... it has a nice idea to show creative gore scenes and possession but the acting and story kinda makes it fall flat for me. The actors and actresses just kinda feel stale and lifeless.
It did have some pretty horrific gore scenes though. But a few scenes were dragged out, for instance, the intestine vomiting scene lasts a good ~5 or so minutes. Really could've been cut shorter but they dragged it out so it didn't shock as well for me.
It's a nice love letter to Guinea Pig but don't expect anything amazing.
Bat sin fan dim: Yan yuk cha siu bau (1993)
A movie that lives up to its reputation!
The Untold Story is a Category III movie in Hong Kong which means no person under 18 is permitted. And holy hell I see why. From the moment it begins it jumps right in. The deaths are absolutely brutal and the bloodshed is insane.
The only few gripes I had are that the comedy is kinda bland and the severed body parts are not that convincing. But for what it's worth, it's an insanely good movie that I highly recommend to any heavy horror fan. This is probably so far the heaviest on this list.
Begotten (1989)
Just... what?
I really tried to enjoy this, truly I did. I'm a huge fan of art house/experimental horror movies but I'm just left in the dust here. I don't get it. It's a dude cutting himself up and a bunch of other random scenes that don't make sense. Even knowing the "story" it still makes no sense to me.
Tetsuo (1989)
A mixed bag for me
As much as i love these kinds of low budget experimental movies, this one was a little hard to follow story wise. Around after he first encounters woman is where i started to get confused, other than that it's a wonderful movie. Amazing soundtrack and fight scenes.
Zombi 2 (1979)
Not Fulci's finest work but still good
Recently i finally got around to watching this movie and beneath al the heavy zombie gore, guts, screaming and kickass music in the last act is a boring slow mess in the first two. Despite that, it's still a watchable - and enjoyable - zombie movie which i recommend to any fans of either Fulci's work or zombie movies in general.
Jigsaw (2017)
Tried to bring new life but fails
I'm a die-hard Saw fan so I decided to go back to watch them all before Spiral comes out to prep myself and good lord I forgot how lackluster this film is. It tries to bring new life to Saw but ends up being a watered down mess with a predictable plot and traps that are nothing compared to the other Saw movies.
It makes a new story out of a "copycat". One that they just shoehorn in with all these other connections to Kramer. They're all just kinda stuffed together in a messy hodgepodge of a below average gore-thriller with bad acting and unlikable characters.
Needless to say I hope Spiral ends up truly bringing a new life to Saw and pulling it out of the rut that was the past few films.
Ice Cream Man (1995)
Goosebumps went sinister.
I absolutely love this movie. It has the fee of a goosebumps episode with a fair amount of gore. Not enough to be overbearing to most, however. It focuses more on the aspect of the kids and the police investigating the Ice Cream Man. The music gives it a nice childlike chill.
Creep 2 (2017)
Feels Unnecessary But Still Fun
Creep is one of my favorite horror films of the past few years but this just kinda felt unnecessary in comparison to the original. Creep was disturbing and actually scary but this just felt more like a drama and like it was trying to tie loose ends but just makes for a lackluster sequel. Though I will say it has its nice moments and it's disturbing for sure but more embarrassing disturbing.
Hostel (2005)
Run-of-the-mill Eli Roth
If you've seen an Eli Roth film before, you're gonna know what to expect. Pleasing to gore fanatics but lacking in story. It's just average. It tries to make up for its plot holes and dry characters with the gore showing some bloody results.
Angst (1983)
Disgusting and Beautiful
This movie is horrific and disgusting but the cinematography made it incredible. The stability shots following a character, the aerial shots, they all made it amazing. The movie felt like one continuous motion, no cutting forward no cutting back just focused on one single crime. As disgusting and grim as it may be, it still was a good film.
Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 (1987)
So bad it's good
First of all, don't even bother watching the first one since this shows most of it in the first half. That being said, this is one of the stupidest, most hilarious films I've ever watched.
The main character uses the fake, deep voice to make himself sound so threatening and cool and it's just so stupidly hilarious. The acting is so bad that it's beautiful. The violence is so overbearingly cheesy.
If you want a hilarious horror movie to watch this holiday season, this is it.
Manhunter (1986)
Don't judge a book by its cover
All the reviews are about how it isn't faithful to the book but what movie is actually 100% faithful to the book(s)? Not many, that's for sure. Manhunter is a charming first entry to the Hannibal franchise. Brian Cox obviously does not beat Anthony Hopkins but he does give Hannibal a nice creepy feel.
My only complaint would be that they really don't refine the characters, the chemistry is left in the dust to make way for the action and mystery. But other than that it's a wonderful movie.
Dolls (1986)
Actually not that bad!
This movie - though it's a bit cheesy - isn't that bad! I honestly expected something hilariously bad but it was actually pretty good. The scares were honestly really well done. Probably one of the few horror movies about dolls that wasn't hilariously bad. The movement of the dolls was really well done and the so were the effects. All in all if you like movies about killer dolls - this is a great pick.
