Amadeus (1984)
Beautiful film, and very misunderstood
This cannot be taken as a biography. How many times must this be said until you people believe that? I love Mozart, and I also love this film. It never shows Salieri killing Mozart, in fact it never even shows Salieri as the Man in Black, it shows Salieri's reaction to Mozart and God. People blame this for bad feeling against Salieri, but that's simply not true. Salieri was a dead name until this film came about. People aren't stupid enough to think Salieri actually killed Mozart. I cannot understand anyone not liking this film. It's beautifully crafted, written and acted. It's a bit of historical fiction, and revived interest in Mozart. I love this film. I could go on, but I won't. W. A. Mozart is one of my favorite people of all time, and this film shows him in a very human way. They do not portray him as an untouchable genius, but as they very real man he was. As an aspiring Mozart scholar I would know that this is not a very accurate film. But so what? It's beautiful, touching, and makes me cry every time I see it. If you enjoy classical music, go see this film. If you enjoy good movies, go rent this. If you enjoy wonderful, character driven performances, go get this. You will not regret it. It's a wonderful, brilliant film
Life of Brian (1979)
The Python's best, not sacrilegious, just a brilliant film
I'm all for Holy Grail. I do love a bit of Meaning of Life now and then. But give me Life of Brian anytime. It's funny, it's deep, it's entertaining, it's (often, for me anyway) tear-jerking. This film is not only very well made but also very clever. The jokes are mostly intelligent and it's comments on religion should not be ignored.
This has often been listed as one of the best films for atheists, and has been fought by the hyper-religious. In actuality, neither side is correct. Life of Brian neither advocates atheism or goes against religion in any way. It goes against overly-religious people and how quick they are to follow anyone and believe anything without thinking for themselves. Jesus is shown once, in a very positive way. Brian does not claim to be the Messiah, people just blindly believe it.
Everyone in the film does a fantastic job. John Cleese is, as always, most enjoyable when yelling. Eric Idle (A personal hero of mine) is delightful, cheeky, and gets a chance to show off not only his great body but also his sweet voice. You can't turn around in Life of Brian without running into Michael Palin, but he does a decent job with each character. Jones is perfect as Brian's mother and Terry Gilliam gives probably his best performance as a 'mad and deaf' jailer (Complimented perfectly by the wonderful Eric Idle). However, the gem of the film is the late Graham Chapman as Brian. Chapman throws himself into the role, and plays it to humanistic perfection. His performance (and the fantastic actress that plays Judith) are what sets Life of Brian apart from the other two Python films. It gives it a very human feel, and you truly sympathize with Brian.
This is, without a doubt in my mind, one of the best comedic films of all time. It challenged how far you could go in films and influenced a generation. Truly, the Pythons did for comedy what the Beatles did for music. And they prove it best in this fantastic film.
(From my experience, the only people who don't like Life of Brian are those that either 'don't get it' and are confused by the lack of fart jokes or are over-religious and needlessly offended.)
Splitting Heirs (1993)
Not bad, rent if you love Eric Idle or Monty Python
This film wasn't awful. I'll start by saying that. There was many things that this film was, but awful was not one of them. Reading that last sentence, it didn't really make sense, but you know what I mean. I'm a die-hard Monty Python fan and rabid Eric Idle lover, so I'm a bit (Ha!) biased. But really, this wasn't bad. It wasn't something that I'd expect from a great like Eric, but there's nothing wrong with making a movie solely for profit. It may have looked good on paper, but it didn't translate well to the screen. Other Monty Python and Eric Idle fans will love this for the inside jokes, but those who don't like Monty Python do yourself, and Eric, a favor and stay away. Go rent 'Life of Brian' or 'All You Need Is Cash' to see Eric at a better time. The one thing that really bothered me was John Cleese's character. It's like Eric called him up and said, "Hey John, why don't you play an evil, selfish lawyer? You know, for a change?"
The Meaning of Life (1983)
Refreshingly honest, sometimes rude, very funny
This is the most brilliant Python film. Without a doubt. While it wasn't as laugh a minute as Holy Grail, and it didn't suck me into the story like Life of Brian, this is a brilliant and odd commentary on life, death, and Americans. The easily offended or fanatically religious should steer clear, but everyone else (Except small children) should see this movie. Cleese is hardly in the film, which follows an odd trend. He was practically every single character in Holy Grail, less in Life of Brian, and now he only plays three characters. Idle is hands down my favorite and does a wonderful job in this film, as does Palin. Chapman and Jones didn't play many characters, but had some very memorable bits. The songs are catchy and, trust me, you'll get them in your head for days at a time. There are some bits that are deep and disturbing, some that are just plain weird, and some that are crude, but every sketch has a meaning, almost a moral, if you will. You try and figure out what that message is. It's half the fun of watching this delightful film.
The Wrong Guy (1997)
This is the BEST movie ever! Dave Foley is WONDERFUL!!
I LOVE Dave Foley and this is his BEST film!! I watch it every day!! All my friends agree- it's not only funny, it's brilliant! Dave Foley must be the cutest actor in Hollywood. Other then Kids in the Hall the TV show this is the best thing he's ever done. He works well with the leading lady- Jennifer Tilly. And the Hitchcock scene is brilliant! SEE THIS MOVIE!!
