Boom Man (2006)
Boom Man, one of the best shorts I've seen
Boom Man has everything you'd expect in a short film and much much more. There is romance, drama, action, and comedy, all mixed into the role of Alex, played by the awesomely funny Jim O'Brien. Alex is a writer who has a few problems that he needs to over come to cure his writer's block, one being his affinity for cats. I have been a fan of Jim's stand-up and hilarious songs for years. Finally someone starred him in a movie and, in my opinion, it was a smart move. Steven Wright has definitely out done himself here, and I can't wait to see the two of them team up again, for not only a short, but maybe even a full-length feature film. All I can say is that I hope these guys keep it up!!!!
The Fountain (2006)
Mixed Feelings
This movie is a great example of a movie that seems like it tries to hard. The acting is wonderful, the special effects and the music, are both top notch but this movie just leaves one very confused. It skips around more than a 60 year old scratched record. First I thought I was watching something that happened long ago in Spain...then all of a sudden the audience is sent into an orb floating somewhere in outer-space. Sure this is cool and everything but, I struggled to keep up in the beginning. Then as the plot unfolds and the audience comes to learn certain things about what is going on in the life of the main character; all of the symbolism of the movie starts to fall into place. However, it is not always a good thing to rely on so much symbolism to keep the audience interested in the movie. There were times where I thought I was going to pass out in the chair, other times I was asking my girlfriend what the heck was going on. It just seemed like the movie tried to complicate things, when the story is really very simple. All in all this was an entertaining movie. If you can put up with some confusion and slow moving scenes see this film. If you are not so artsy and like a straight-forward movie then this definitely isn't for you.
Katedra (2002)
I Couldn't Believe My Eyes
The first time I ever saw The Cathedral, I was sitting in Film class in high school. It was the only movie all year that I didn't want to end. It held my attention, from the beginning to the end. In fact I didn't even notice that I didn't blink until my contacts blurred over. The computer animation is just stunning, the soundtrack is beautiful, and the story is brilliant; there can be so many different interpretations. Once I saw The Cathedral, I wanted to watch it again and again. If you get a chance to see this film definitely see it, see what you think it means. You'll definitely have fun trying to figure out the meaning of it all.
The Stuff (1985)
Primordial Marshmellow
My friends and I love B-Horror films, we just can't get enough of them. The horrible acting, the fake blood, the agonizing chase scenes; they are wonderful. The Stuff was definitely one of the B-est movies I have ever scene. The real redeeming part of this movie is the humor aspect in it all. Sure the movie contains a white marshmellowy material that takes control of whoever eats it, but there is a lot of humor in it; hence the reason I gave it a 4. If it didn't keep me laughing, I wouldn't have even given it a 2. By all means rent this movie, it'll definitely make you laugh and you can tell all of your friends you have seen a move called The Stuff.
Saw III (2006)
SAW Does it again...
When I went to see the first of the Saw movies I could not believe the twists and turns that the movie led me through. Not in my wildest dreams did I think the movie would end the way that it did. Saw 2 did the same thing. It kept me on the edge of my seat; I am pretty sure I didn't blink the entire time. Saw 3 did it again, one of the only horror movies that really didn't disappoint me this year. Sure you can say that it is way too gory, and it is the downfall of our civilization to consider it entertainment, etc. Really, one has to appreciate what the kind people at Twisted Pictures have brought us. The Saw franchise has brought the viewer something that I believe no one has ever seen. The blood is only dyed water, and the marks on people are only makeup. As for people reenacting the Saw traps, everyone is so quick to blame the movie and not the person. I think it is funny how that works. No one ever complains about the violence in war or action movies, so why complain about this. I believe this movie to be a real must see for Saw fans, and if you don't like it don't complain. Just don't go see it, it is as easy as that.
Silent Hill (2006)
Silent Hill gamers must see - Everyone else maybe
Silent Hill the movie...I gasped in excitement when I first saw the trailer to this movie. I loved the games and thought that seeing on the big screen would be a blast. I am sure this is what everyone else who has played the games thought when they saw the trailer. I don't know about anyone else, but it definitely did not disappoint me. The acting was right on, the visuals were stunning, and the soundtrack, which was taken right from the game, was as entrancing as the game was. If you played the game its a must see.
For everyone that hasn't played the game and are curious about this movie: This movie is based off of one of the first horror thriller games to come out called Silent Hill. It is about this town where really bad stuff happened earlier in history, and the town was tainted so to speak. I'm not going into detail because I don't want to ruin anything for you. In that knowledge it might be easier to grasp. I know for a fact that if you haven't played the games, the movie can be kind of out there. It is still a good quality horror flick, that can raise the hairs on the back of your neck. If you don't like out there horror movies and are really about the more realistic stuff, then this isn't for you. But if you like things that can come from the imagination, then this is a definite must see.
Darkness (2002)
Good horror film disguised as a bad one
This is one of those classic horror movies that could have been just a little more fine tuned, and it would be great. It has all the elements of a great horror movie; there are weird looking demons, an awesome story line, creepy little children, and a really well done soundtrack. Its just one of those movies that one can go to see and sit at the edge of his or her seat for the entire thing, but when the end comes one just feels empty, kind of like opening a Christmas present that has socks in it. I thought the plot could have been wrapped up better at the end, and I think making it a little longer wouldn't have hurt either. But overall it was a decent film and I recommend seeing it at least once.
Hellbreeder (2004)
Hellbreeder?
Here's the scenario: You walk into the local video store and you see the B-Horror section. You think to yourself, "Maybe I'll get a bad horror film tonight and enjoy some pathetic film making." You walk down the isles of movies and one catches your eye. A movie known as Hellbreeder. You think to yourself, "This looks interesting." Well trust me you couldn't be more wrong. This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I can say this because I have seen the worst of the worst B-Horror films, from Ed Wood's Plan 9 From Outer Space, to the early 80's Scalps. The plot will remind you of Stephen King's IT; a scary clown that kills little kids. This plot is good for the basis of a horror film, yes. But what it lacks is any kind of acting, dialog, camera stability, good special effects, and really there is no way to tell what is happening. There are actually scenes in this movie that made me very sick because of the camera movements. I really do not know what else to say to express my disgust in this movie. So I'll put it really simply.
DO NOT!!! - AND I REPEAT - DO NOT PURCHASE THIS MOVIE!!! Anyone who tells you otherwise should be committed.
