The 6th Day (2000)
'Invasion' of a different kind.
I like the movie. The story line reminds me of the 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'
The Lake House (2006)
You've Got Mail meets Frequency
This reminds me so much of You've Got Mail aka The Shop Around The Corner. They met once not knowing who each was until he realized who she was. They communication by snail-mail. They like the same book. Like frequency they're separated by time. Maybe a little When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless In Seattle thrown in for good measure.
The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)
Blooper
Near the end when Bond is chasing Herve Villechaize around the bedroom, Villechaize starts throwing wine bottles. Empty wine bottles.
Halloween II (1981)
The Halloween II remake is totally disappointed. Watch the original, you won't be disappointed.
It's 2015 and AMC is showing the remake of Halloween II(2009). I didn't even know they did a remake of #2( and that's what it is, #2) All I can say is the remake sucks. There is nobody in the remake that is a audience draw to begin with although I see some recognized 'filler' characters. Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance add tangible character to this version. I can see certain movies that are geared to a newer generation but there are many movies that anyone can relate to no matter when they were born. Why ruin a good thing when it ain't broke. All the advances in computer animation are wonderful...for original ideas. As with all remakes, nothing is as good as the original. Big 2 thumbs down for the remake and totally all thumbs up for the original one. The Michael Myers Halloween theme has a big impact on this series as well as the camera techniques and special effects which are non-existent in these dumb money grabbing remakes.
The Thing (2011)
This 'Play' is not 'The Thing'
I have not see this 'remake' of the remake or prequel to the 1982 remake. I am not a fan of the 1982 version. And reading the reviews of the 2011 prequel it would seem the only thing it too has in common with the original is its Arctic location. The 1982 remake (if you can call it that) had none of the terror and excitement of the 1951 version. In the 1982 version you would never know that any of the characters were actual scientists and there was a definite lack of U. S. Air Force types who helped open up Arctic exploration as depicted in the original. From the reviews it looks like they rounded up the usual suspects from the 1982 version. Hollywood has run out of ideas. They can't even do a good job on remakes without diluting and distorting the original stories. Look at the botched job of the remake of the super classic sci-fi movie The Day The Earth Stood Still.
Murdoch Mysteries (2008)
Great Canadian series
I love this series. It's our own. It's Canadian. It's simple but sophisticated. The character of Murdoch is a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Benton Fraser, the Mountie in Due South. And as someone said all the characters play off each other so well. It's a challenge to try and recognize some of the city's architecture. There's a nice balance of historical fact and fiction in the episodes that keep you interested. I keep waiting to see if the relationship between Dr. Julia Ogden and Murdoch comes to fruition but its like Castle and Becket in Castle, Rab and Mac in JAG or Ziva and DaBozo on NCIS. Just enough action to keep you hanging on and add some balance(love interest) to the show.
Rookie Blue (2010)
It's Canadian so don't hide it.
I notice most of the negative reviews come from our neighbours to the south which is understandable considering the crime rates in US cities. I like the show but I agree there's a lot of fluff and it doesn't properly depict life as cop, whether rookie or vet. To be fair, this IS the first season and hopefully someone will take notice of the negative reviews and make some necessary changes for next season. The last show that had a measure of 'Canadianism' was DUE SOUTH. It was entertaining but unfortunately perpetuated the myth that it snows all year round in Canada and that we all live in igloos and wear lumberjack shirts. I like that Rookie Blue is more 'Canadian' than some past shows but I don't think they go far enough. Where are the red hat-bands that Canadian police forces wear(unless you're from Buffalo). Toronto is a world class city that most of the world is familiar with and this show should let the viewers know it. We locals know it is Toronto by the street names. We're a grown up city and we don't need to be another New York or Chicago or Boston. So why not be more Canadian, I'm sure our real identity will be accepted. We have the same crime problems as every other city in world. So say its Toronto and don't hide it.
Santa Fe Trail (1940)
Similarities with 'They Died With Their Boots On'
It's funny to see the similarities of this movie to a movie Errol Flynn made a year later. 'They Died With Their Boots On' starts out the same way, at West Point. In 'Boots', Errol Flynn plays the part of George Custer and Olivia De Havilland plays his wife. John Litel plays General Sheridan. They both have similar beginnings but tell different stories during the Civil War. Santa Fe deals with the problem of slavery, the abolitionist John Brown and in part shows how the Underground Railway helped some blacks escape slavery. It also shows the harsh reality for those who helped those blacks on the run to freedom. 'Boots' deals with the life of General George Custer, his rise through officer ranks and the dilemma he is faced with that leads to his demise at Little Big Horn. Regardless of any 'liberties' taken by the directors, both movies give an interesting incite into these historical events of the American Civil War.
A Child's Christmas in Wales (1987)
A Christmas Viewing Tradition
I have enjoyed this film rendition of Dylan Thomas's poem ever since I first saw it on TV back in the 80's. I look forward to viewing as much as I do my other favourite, A Christmas Carol with Alistaire Sim. It gives you an idea of what a traditional Christmas was like back in early 1900's England. Reminds me of the Christmas's I had when I was growing up. Not much different, the big family get-together, the uncles, granddad and dad falling asleep in the rec-room after the big dinner. Mom, grandma and my aunts clearing the table and doing the dishes. Showing everyone your gifts and playing with your cousins. Makes me long for the simpler days. I've been viewing a copy I made off TV up till about 2 years ago when I found a used video tape on eBay. Then last year it was released on DVD which is a vast improvement from the used rental copy. A real great Christmas movie for all ages. If you can find a copy, buy it as soon as you can. They are as scarce and hen's teeth. The video tape is even scarcer.
