Enthiran (2010)
Not a usual Shankar movie... could've been better without "Indian CGI"
I am a fan of Shankar's movies, as they have a strong message about family values, corruption in politics etc. Endhiran was more of a glamorous movie with little substance and no reality. Anyone who has watched movies like Transformers, Terminator or Avatar would agree that Endhiran's CGI was awful. Sure it was better than other Indian movies attempt at CGI - but nowhere near believable.
The first half of the movie was good as it shows us the benefits of having a robot with 1 Terahertz computing power. But the story starts to become cheesy when the robot is given the ability of "feel" and think like human beings. The ending sequence looked like it was written by a 6 year old. Hundreds of robots combining to form a ladder & then a snake??? ...really
Avatar (2009)
Jurassic Park + Terminator = Avatar
The last time I was this thrilled, was while watching Jurassic park. I have never liked a 3D movie so much before Avatar. From the moment Sam Worthington's "avatar" lands into Pandora, it is an adrenaline pumping action till the end.
For the first time I loved a movie, whose trailer I hated. I went to see this movie just because of the hype and publicity - and I was wrong. The trailer of this movie gives out nothing, unlike other trailers (which tells the whole story in 2 minutes).
This is also the first movie that I would like to see again in the theater!
Where's the Party Yaar? (2003)
Clear depiction of the ABCD culture
This movie portrays the difficulties faced by the FOBs to assimilate into the American culture. The reason I changed my title summary to "abcd culture" is because the movie actually shows how the ABCD's treat the fresh of the boat.
Hari, who is caring and considerate is looked down upon by his "American" cousin, Mohan aka MO (I would rather call him mofo). Although I personally like Kal Penn, its his character that I hated. Though Hari's character is a little exaggerated, the prejudice suffered by him, closely relate that to mine (or to many other fobs). The moment an ABCD discovers that his peer or classmate is a fob, he would try to avoid him. And this is exactly what is displayed throughout the movie... from the experiences of Hari, Shyam and his friends! I loved all the comedy scenes, although it was hurting inside.
Yuvvraaj (2008)
Poor direction, bad script and ridiculous acting!
The only reason I gave this movie 3 stars is because of the music by A.R.Rahman! The script by antique writers Sachin Bhowmick and Kamlesh Pandey has a dated feel and lacks any sort of innovation in storytelling or intelligence in screenplay structure. Subhash Ghai's worn-out direction only makes the proceedings worse and wearisome. The scenes are jumbled with continuity lapses and the dialogues range from clichéd to preposterous. Only Salman Khan can pass off with such ludicrous lines like, " Abhi toh sirf well-done kiya hai, abhi dun-dun karna baaki hai " or " Tumne bharosa kiya , now trust me". Whatever that is supposed to mean! Subtlety is so nonexistent in Ghai's casual approach towards the treatment of the film and despite the magnified melodrama, three is no conspicuous chemistry between the three siblings esp. A psychiatrist explains that mentally deficient humans are always proficient at classical singing. New research? Ghai isn't even able to pull-off the Farah Khan style of cast-crew introduction which he attempts in the end credits. And when you are squirming in your seats with impatience, a song goes to say, " Tu Muskura ".
The screen intermittently shows Hindi subtitles when the characters speak in English. How I wish it could also give captions on what Subhash Ghai wanted to express in the scenes, as most fall flat and fail to deliver. I am intrigued what would he comment if the DVD of the film ever had the director's commentary option.
The performances are as disguised as the mannequins and masks that dominate the art-direction. Salman seems to justify his real-life anger, arrogance and obsession (each of which he admits in the film) through the character of Deven as he goes on a glass-shattering and violin-smashing mode. Anil Kapoor wears his trousers the Raj Kapoor style and repeats his innocent act of films like Eshwar, Beta and Kishen Kanhaiya . You never quite understand whether he is singing or boxing. Literally! Mithun Chakravarthy seems to have shot his entire footage in one day as he appears throughout in the same suit
T.P. Balagopalan M.A. (1986)
Touching movie
I watched this movie just today and cried at the last scene. Mohanlal is at his best. The movie starts with comedy, and half way through its pure entertainment with comedy. The second half is emotional, with Mohanlal losing his property for his girl friend, shobhana's family. Srinivas has a negative role..though he is the writer of this excellent movie.
Mohanlal is a middle class mallu, whose paycheck is not enough to pay off his electricity and other utility bills. Mohanlal has to save money for his house, for his sister's marriage, and his "aliyan's kids".. He resorts to selling his property for judiciary expenses of Shobhana's father. He falls in love with Shobhana, tries to impress her. However, her parents take advantage of him and deny Mohanlal and Shobhana's marriage.
