FreakAngels (2022– )

This would have been a cult classic 15 years ago.

I don't know why you would take an obscure web comic from the late 00's and create a show around something whose popularity has since ebbed.

If you are going to adapt something like that into a viable show, you better put some real money and talent behind it otherwise you end up making what looks to be a very good student animation effort.

To that end: This is a good warm up for future animators, voice actors and production specialists to cut their teeth on learning the ins and outs of this type of business.

The "High Guardian Spice" reference is unfair seeing as how that show placed more emphasis on the identity of the writers/actors than the actual show.

I tip my hat to CR for playing it safe and picking something that most people are unfamiliar with so if it does poorly in adaptation only 50 people how actual remember reading it would know how much was missed, altered, rushed or left out entirely.

Watch it if you want a palette cleanser between shows with much better production values. The story isn't bad but it screams of what happens when a writer doesn't actually plan how a story arc is meant to move, characters grow, and allowing the weight situations set in appropriately for deaths, abuse or even personal struggles and the way threads between friends, enemies and bystanders weaken, strengthen and entangle themselves in unyielding ways.

Warning: Spoilers
General PSA: Please buy the DVD/ merchandise if you really like a show and want it to come back for additional seasons/runs.

I thought this was going to be "look at how political/edgy/woke" type of show that was going to be incredibly divisive. Instead, good character development and low-brow humor that, outside of the obvious superhero universe it takes place in, have authentic sounding conversations and the same kind of apathy to the high-value stakes with witty talk about things that drift between dark humor and personal problems that most anyone can nod and say," Yea, I have done that dumb jazz too."

I enjoy the fact it doesn't shy away from profanity as we all know they would definitely be dropping F-bombs all over the place in this type of world. They throw c*nt out there as well and I have never heard this used in the US unless they were Aussies or Brits. That through me off, but I loved it all the same because it added that extra layer of ridiculous people, we know, exists and see from time to time. I can't give it all 10 because I genuienly like the old school Harley Quinn outfit from the 90's Batman cartoons and she is show transitioning to her current model design. This is really a nit-pick and has nothing to do with the overall show. She does wear it in the first episode before ditching the hammer and outfit for the bat and hotpants.

Truthfully, this makes a lot more sense for her character weilding a sleeker weapon and wearing clothes/shoes that would give her an added advantage in combat over her heeled, onesy and over sized hammer: this is getting to involved.

I look forward to more seasons of this and I WILL buy the dvds to show the studio that I want them to make more and so should you. If you complain about your favorite shows getting cancelled but fail to patron their wares: you have yourself to blame along with others failing to buy. Money makes things happen! I understand the economy is looking like Apollo Creed in the ring with Ivan Von Drago and if it isn't in your budget, don't force it to be. But if you have residual income and can afford it, then please buy what you can.
