Last Night in Soho (2021)
Much Like the Fashion Industry, All Style No Substance
'Last Night in Soho' is a technical masterpiece. The first time that the main character goes back in time and walks in the footsteps of the blonde from the 60's is absolutely brilliant.
Too bad the movie is a bore to sit through. All the characters are boring, most of the action is plot driven instead of character driven and the plot isn't very good at being engaging. Forty minutes into this pretty piece of film making I found myself muttering, 'Looks like I've got another five hours to go.'
Too boring to really recommend.
Justin Bieber: Our World (2021)
When the concert was over, nobody wanted an encore.
Bieber looks bored.
While watching this, I kept on getting the feeling that he was offered a lot of money to return to the stage after three years and that he really doesn't want to be there. During the performance he spends half of his time looking down while he sings and the other half, with his head held up but not held high to actually look at the concert goers who are watching him from their hotel balconies.
I guess Bieber fans will enjoy it because all the songs he sings sound like they do on the radio.
Terror Train (1980)
Terror Train
Terror Train is a completely average horror film.
It isn't bad so you won't be getting any kicks or laughs out of it being so bad that it is good. On the other hand, there isn't much that stands out about it. The opening prank that sends the guy over the edge is a good set up for the killer's motivation. I feel that the party on the train was handled nicely, in that it felt like a party. The stand out scene in the film for me is Jamie Lee Curtis' confrontation with the killer near the end. That was really well done.
If I'm to complain about anything with this movie, it would have to be that the characters aren't given a lot to do which makes the movie drag more than it should.
Kadaver (2020)
Annie? Annie? Annie? Annie? Annie? ......
After a nuclear war, people are starving. Lucky for them that a play is going on in hotel up on the hill where they will be fed before the play begins.
The set up was interesting enough to catch my attention. I had no problems with the acting and I liked how the film was shot (the reason I'm giving it a 6 out of 10 instead of a 5 out of 10.). It is a pretty looking film.
Where the film falls flat is the writing. I don't think I'm over exaggerating when I say that the movie consists of a couple yelling their daughter's name for a half hour or more while they look for her.
'Annie?'
Walk into another room.
'Annie?'
Walk into another room.
Annie?'
Walk into another room.
Sad thing is that this half hour search is the strongest writing in the film. Most of the script feels like a polished rough draft where nothing was cut out nor was anything explored in a meaningful way.
The Social Dilemma (2020)
We're all doomed unless we disconnect from social media.
The dramatizations in this documentary aren't going to age well. The film is mainly focused on the bad aspects of social media so I'm being told a lot of things I expect to hear about how social media is addictive and how the algorithms manipulate what we see and the content suggested to us It allows dictators to control countries, it allows countries to manipulate the election outcomes of other countries. And the children are defenseless against it. And our brains haven't evolved in millions of years so we can't compete against a super computer. Oh, the doom and gloom. The doom and gloom. Society is coming to an end. If only I could think for myself instead of being a test animal to super computers running the algorithms.
The people being interviewed, most of which are ex-employees of tech giants, are articulate in their speech and the points they make. I started to get bored because it seemed to be the same talking points over and over again.
My problems with the documentary is that they are acting as if these problems never existed before. Before social media, dictators could barely control their countries. Before social media, no country had ever tried to manipulate the election results of another country. Before social media, children were happy and with high self esteem.
Give me a break.
