King Kong (2005)
Was the length really needed?
I have to give Peter Jackson all the credit in the world. He's a great director, the visuals are excellent, and his movies just plain look great. Unfortunately for Kong, there were visuals but that was about it. Rarely do I get tired of movies, but I was nearly unconscious by the time this thing was over. Taken by themselves, the scenes were great. Pieced together, though, it just dragged on and on... and on. I guess it would be a good movie to watch if you watched it a half hour at a time, just together it was too long and too much. By the time the movie was over I was relieved just to be doing something else. The movie had little surprises and followed a formula that was predictable and bland. Set-up, set-up, set-up, action, action, action, action, action. It was just too much.
All in all, watching a movie is like eating a meal. Something could be great to eat, but if you're forced to eat plate after plate after plate, it's just not going to sit well in your stomach after an overload.
Inside Man (2006)
Overall, a good flick
For a movie that was "just another heist/hostage movie", this was done very well. While the ending was a bit unsatisfying, the rest of the film was enjoyable. I contribute a lot of this to Spike Lee, the film was shot very well and had a certain style that kept the movie interesting. The actors did their job excellently and gave the movie a realistic feel. The script wasn't that strong but it wasn't weak and it was enough to keep me interested. There were certain holes which are examined in other comments but they don't really subtract from the film. It's a given that in a movie like this there are bound to be a few holes and if you aren't too critical, things should be just fine.
All in all, I gave this movie a solid 8. Though the movie wasn't written very well, everyone else in the production did their jobs quite nicely. Definitely worth renting at Blockbuster.
A History of Violence (2005)
A series of anti-climatic events
I was expecting this movie to be great from the reviews and, I'm not going to lie, the interest-drawing title. The movie started out just fine with a good opening scene and was even going fine but was totally ruined by the time we reached the middle. There wasn't a main struggle in the film and Mortensen's acting was bland at best. The struggle between the son and the bully was totally unrealistic and completely lame. The characters weren't natural and everything just seemed so scripted. I know it's a movie but there has to be a hint of realisticness that this movie just didn't have.
Above it all, though, the main thing that got me was the anti-climatic events between Fogarty and Tom. They were building it slowly and it seemed to be going fine but out of nowhere they just kill off what was looking to be the main antagonist? And the whole scene with the brother, was there a point? They didn't build up a struggle and he just goes back to kill him? Why? All in all, it was poorly written and the acting was terrible.
Mail Order Wife (2004)
I had no idea
I was surfing through movies on the twenty movie channels I have last night and this one caught my eye. I info'd it and got the description "A documentarian follows a chubby doorman through his marriage with a mail-order bride." I had no idea that it was going to be a mockumentary and as the movie progressed I became more and more confused. I was shocked when it was revealed that Andrew was sleeping with her but in a very amusing "what the heck's going on" sort of way. I really thought that this was just a very messed up documentary. I slowly caught on that it was fake but it didn't stop my enjoyment of the film. The end is absolutely hilarious, I couldn't stop from laughing at loud by myself at the sheer patheticness of the characters. I'm going to have to go back and watch it a second time, just to appreciate the lines in there that I clearly missed before.
My only advice for showing this to friends is that you don't tell them anything other than it's a very interesting documentary. It can't be nearly as funny already knowing it's fake.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Lacks substance
I came to the theater expecting the movie to be filled with action and for the movie to have a storyline that kept me wanting to see more. The film did have it's action, and there wasn't really a break from the constant movement. The thing was that it was too filled with special effects and action sequences, it's my firm belief that effects are great unless they're overdone. Unfortunately, it was overdone. It seemed that they just wanted to push out a movie to capitalize off the previous movie's success and didn't care as long as they got it out there. It wouldn't of been as bad if the movie hadn't of been as long as it was or if it had been building towards something meaningful, but it was dragging on for no real reason. The ending was terrible as well.
So, in all, I'd say I was disappointed. The main theme of my criticism is that action is fabulous but when it's overdone it doesn't sit well in one's stomach. I'm going to see the third one hoping it recaptures some of the first film's magic, but I won't be holding the same expectations I was holding for this film.
