Everybody's Everything (2019)
Totally Peep
This is exceptionally well made and the best biopic I've seen! It oozes with childish and chaotic energy of someone with contagious post-teenage angst and a gothic hyper-expression. In the well-placed frame narrative of Peep's granddad, he alludes to Peep being a creative force of good in the world. This biopic is really good at flitting between poignancy and Peep's offhand, silly humour and recklessness. It also offers accurate light on his arguable fentanyl poisoning (that his death could be a murder). It's also amazing how this doc doesn't condescend on his drug use and instead contextualises it within his mania.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Boundless
Somehow this film is boundless, effortless. It sets up Chekhov's guns without you noticing (which you are unconsciously keeping track of) - the white piece of bird/paper that clings onto Chihiro's back, the ominous and ultimately amoral Noface, the elixir, the miniaturised baby, the subplot of the inverted twin sister. Like her postponed parental pigs, Spirited Away really is a series of postponements. In this way it revels by building an index of accidental journeys and imitates an organic motion.
