A League of Their Own (2022)
Needed to decide on what it wanted to be
The show needed to decide on what it wanted to be, a show about baseball, a show about discrimination or a show about sexual orientation. Baseball takes a distant 3rd for most of it so putting the League of Their Own title on it seems nothing but a stamp to get viewers.
It could have been a good show if there'd been more focus one way or the other. Which is a pity because it's a good show, good acting, good script, good quality production.
I gave it a five due to the lack of direction problems. Maybe should have been a six as they got the "no crying in baseball line in without it sounding terrible"
Midnight Mass (2021)
Could Have Been Great
Each 40 minute episode is 35 minutes of religious monologues and the occasional hymn sung in its entirety, then 5 minutes of action to keep you interested. If it had been a better mix of both, maybe questioning faith it could have been so much more entertaining viewing.
Good on Paper (2021)
Not Bad, When Not Trying to be Seinfeld
The film part is decent enough, but being interspersed with her stand-up messes with the flow of the film and not really funny.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
A Mess
I gave it a 3 because even if it was a cliché ending it was watchable, the ending was watchable, the rest was a mess. Average acting and a confused storyline didn't help it unfortunately.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Read About it on Wikipedia Save Your Time
A show about a sad death ruined by YouTube conspiracy theory crazies.
Would have been a decent 90 minutes to 2 hours but padded out to 4 hours makes it almost embarrassing.
Brian Grazer and Ron Howard producing should have done a better job.
A Sunburnt Christmas (2020)
Great Antidote to Sickly Sweet Christmas Films
Quirky Australian Christmas movie with great performances by a largely inexperienced cast is probably the best way to review this. It's funny and heartfelt. My only negative might be that the ending involved some comical violence and some kids may not like it.
Overall a great antidote to sickly sweet Christmas films with and with Australian twist
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020)
Could have been great if not associated with PD
There are a few positives thankfully. Nathan Lane is excellent as usual. I'm not not a big fan of Natalie Dormer but she does well handling multiple characters. Production values are good, great sets and you can see where the money went.
Unfortunately by associating it with the Penny Dreadful name and supernatural themes you expect certain things that were all missing.
If it was promoted as a political thriller and altered a few characters it would have worked. Unfortunately there is close to no supernatural so it falls flat badly.
PROBABLY A SPOILER ALERT
The ending was terrible, nothing happens and leaves you flat after sitting though hours of the show.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
A Mess
Dialled the politics, race, war messages up to 11 and wasn't able to put a decent script around it for balance. Could have been a good buddy film but took it in the wrong direction.
Curon (2020)
Could Have Been Good
Quick review: bad acting and whomever did the music thinks they're a DJ in Ibiza, it's way too loud and just plain awful techno for the most part.
Pity because the idea is ok and with some refinement it could have been good
