Anne (2017)
It was a pleasure to watch
"Anne with an e" appeared on my Netflix preview, and with an interesting plot, I chose to indulge in the first episode... which soon turned into 5 episodes in a single sitting. I, unfortunately, have never had the chance to watch Anne of green gables of which this is based on. So, I feel as though my opinion is unbiased towards how this revival holds up to the original. I will say that from the very start, the show is very captivating, emotional, and a real journey. I fell in love with the main characters from the start, and hated to have to "say goodbye" at the end of the first season last episode. I don't know if they plan on continuing and making a second season, but it would greatly be a pleasure to see. I would recommend this show to anyone who has a particular interest in shows similar to little house on the prairie or anyone who enjoys lighthearted drama, family, and spunky little red-heads!
10/10
Lights Out (2016)
A great movie experience; worth your time
I rate Lights Out 10/10 because I honestly couldn't find one reason to not completely love it. The characters were phenomenal, the story line caught my attention from the beginning, and I honestly felt it was one of the better horror movies of 2016. Although I have watched other movies with similar plots, this one really drew me in with the choice of main characters, and I was rooting for them the entire time. The "bad guy" was honestly creepy and had me jumping out of my skin a couple of times- and I am a lover of horror who doesn't scare easily. So, in conclusion, if you have two hours of your time to spare, head to your nearest Redbox and rent this awesome movie- I'm almost certain you won't regret it!
Suicide Squad (2016)
A good soundtrack, but not much else
I rate this movie 5/10.
I had not much hopes for this movie, and actually held out on watching it until it landed at Redbox, despite my enjoyment of DC comics characters & film. I knew only one thing for certain going into this movie, and that was that it did have a pretty good soundtrack.
The beginning of the movie felt like not really a movie at all; actually, I wasn't quite sure what it felt like, but I kept watching, hoping that it would go somewhere, and again, enjoying the "good soundtrack" that was quickly unfolding.
Once the actual "action" started, I watched attentively, until pausing for a 45 minute nap. I then continued, somewhat less attentive, for the remainder of the movie, somehow missing the final "victory", BUT HEY, the soundtrack was GOOD!
To hard core DC Comic fans, there may be some production value here, but for me, it fell short of a good movie and left me short nearly the price of a gallon of gas. I would recommend only spending your money on it if you have to, and instead, wait till it comes out on demand, Netflix, etc. If you do decide to watch it, I doubt it will be one you will be starving to watch again- I know I won't be.
Identity Thief (2013)
It was a lot better than I expected!
I was a little skeptical about this movie, as sometimes it seems like all the funny bits (or scary in the case of a horror movie) are seen in the trailer. Also, the mediocre ratings made me think that this was going to be just some mediocre film. Well, I can happily say that I was proved wrong.
If you actually try to have a good time, you will. Don't get sucked into some sort of high standard that entitles you to not be able to laugh at goofy humor. Why would you even go watch a comedy movie in this day of age if you expected anything more than sexual persuasive / dirty humor? Bottom line, this is a really entertaining movie and had me laughing almost constantly throughout.
Give it a shot and see what you think; you're sure to laugh at some point :)
Dead Wood (2007)
The rain coming down outside probably made me like this film that much more...
As with a lot of the 'less known' films I tend to watch, I usually pick days or times when the weather outside my home is in correlation with the mood of the film I'm trying to enjoy. That being said, when I watched Dead Wood, I just happened to be doing it while listening to the rain coming down outside.
Now, the DVD cover-art has a quote which reads "Sure to scare the hell out of you! -Slasherpool", but for me, this really didn't even come close to happening until the end of the film. For at least 50 min of the film (out of the entire 86 minutes) nothing except gentle plot building occurred. It was hard enough to manage to keep my eyes focused on what I was watching, especially with the rain outside making a better noise than the film. However, after that 50 min (or so) mark, the film greatly started to pick up - almost too quickly.
For a good horror film, I think that there should be some length to the entire struggle/mystery that the characters are going through. This wasn't the case, though, for Dead Wood. I also found it somewhat difficult to pick up on what was happening until near the end, which was both good and bad I suppose.
All of this being said, I gave the film a 5 out of 10, purely because A) The movie was pretty well made - just with a sub par script, and B) Because the ending finally started building intensity and recaptured my attention.
If you're looking for something to 'scare the hell' out of you, this might not be it. But if you want a film that is rather short and takes place in the middle of nowhere, then this is a good choice.
8213: Gacy House (2010)
Not the best, but not the worst either...
8213: Gacy House is what the back of the movie case says it is; no hidden perks. You are told from the very start that the movie is made in narrative form, so if you aren't a fan of that sort of movies, then you will already dislike this one (in my opinion). I know a lot of the reviews here say how crappy this film is, and the ratings on IMDb show that, but I rated on a different factor. In my opinion, this movie was made really well, as in: even though it switches camera angles a million times (from hand-held to stationary), it looks very clean and smooth. I've seen many movies where the story line was superb but the camera was crap - for this film, it is completely opposite. Now having said that, it was still a decent movie, and if watched under the right mindset / conditions, you will likely find some sort of enjoyment out of it. Don't watch it expecting it to be the best film you've ever seen, but likewise, don't watch it already thinking you will hate it. Go in with an open mind and unbiased eyes, and just take it for what it is.
House (2008)
Good movie for a stormy day...
I actually viewed this movie on a day when I had nothing better to do because of flooding storms outside, however, I think even if it had been a sunny day and I was stressed for time, I still would have enjoyed it. The movie followed a pretty realistic plot line, but saying that, it wasn't in any way 100% original; there are plenty of other movies in this same genre which share a segment of the plot line of this movie. The ending, in my opinion, was slightly rushed and completely predictable, and I think that that could leave some a little dissatisfied if they are sticklers for an original, or "perfect", ending.
All in all, if you are a fan of plots occurring in large houses, cat and mouse games, crazy religious fanatics, and a little bit of psychological twists, then this is a perfect movie for you. If you are looking for something which is like nothing else you have ever seen before . . . then you'll likely want to pass this one up.
Orphan (2009)
Great movie to start off a weekend.
Excited that one of my good friends just turned legal age to get into an "R" movie with myself, I was happy that we had the chance and time to see this movie on opening day. Due to lack of TV interest lately, I hadn't actually heard or seen anything about this movie until 3 days prior to watching it. I read the summary of the movie, and accidentally bumped into a major plot spoiler of the movie. Between all of that, and the movie poster and genre I was mostly hooked on seeing it. In my opinion, the beginning started off a tad slow for my tastes (keep in mind that I'm 17). When they brought Ester home is actually the point where I felt that the movie picked up loads of speed and started getting interesting. Of course it wouldn't be a movie in the horror/thriller/suspense category if it didn't have a single sex or nudity scene, right, so I have to say that I half mindedly had to sit through that. But overall, the suspense build up was fantastic, and the comedy breaks here and there were perfectly planted.
Plot spoiler or not, I have to say that I was actually surprised by this movie and was nothing like I had expected. I enjoyed wasting 2 hours on a Friday before work: it was well worth it.
I give this movie an 8/10, because I feel that it needed a little spicing up in a place or two (or maybe it's just my age!).
Ice Spiders (2007)
Good For Back Ground Noise.
OK, So while working on a really long, boring History Project, I decided either listen to music that I've heard over and over again, sit in silence, or, watch the next SciFi movie coming on. Being the SciFi nut I am, I went for the movie.
I really didn't expect much, by reading the movie description, however, they could have went further, and done much better with this movie. The characters absolutely sucked, I must admit, which, I think had some effect over the story line, which, with better acting, would have been a lot better.
But, for a movie that I just "listened too", it wasn't complete, utter, garbage, hence why I gave it a 3. With better acting, it might have gotten a 5. So, if you need something to help waste your already wasted time, or, if you are say, sick with the flu, go ahead, have a laugh; as, if you watch this movie, I guarantee you'll laugh at a few scenes, though mostly out of mere stupidity.
Absolute Zero (2006)
Worth My Time To Watch
OK, yeah, not the best of movies, but, by far not the worst. So the graphics were a little 'out there', but hey, I've seen plenty of popular, award winners that had the same problems. I think that yeah, some of the science/reality was off, such as an ice burg in Miami's beach. But, I think that movies that aren't 'that' realistic are actually better than really scientific ones. Because, I want to watch fiction, not documentaries! And so, a little bit of almost impossible science is OK with me. Though, probably the weakest part of the movie, I have to say, is when the girls father is killed. Is it just me or should she of been on the ground bawling? Seriously, she barely shed a tear. And, the man's wife didn't act that emotional either. Out of everything, I think emotions is one thing this movie needed more of. But, again, I do enjoy movies like this, so, enough complaining. I don't regret buying or watching this movie and you shouldn't either.
